Watch: Jerry Tillery and Jay Hayes Score Two for the Irish with a Safety

The defense comes up big again following a baffling series of play calls by the Tar Heels.

NCAA Football: Temple at Notre Dame Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Notre Dame only had two timeouts with less than a minute left in the first half, looking to escape to the locker room with a seven point lead. After Tyler Newsome pinned the Tar Heels on their own one yard line, all they had to do was run two quarterback sneaks and head to the locker room for halftime adjustments.

But instead, they ran a pass play out of the spread, which resulted in a near-interception. Then came the run out of the shotgun, and it resulted in this:

Baffling, but no credit taken away from the Notre Dame defense. Jay Hayes and Jerry Tillery swallowed up the North Carolina offensive line and running back in the end zone, and the Irish head to halftime with a 16-7 lead, instead of 14-7.

Props to @BarstoolIrish for the highlight.
