College football recruiting is important, and there is no way of downplaying anything about recruiting that doesn’t sound silly this time of year. If we were sitting in April, the talk about the next bunch could be light and full of maybes, but with under a month to go, this stuff is serious business.
I just wrote a fairly comprehensive article about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish recruiting mission right now and outlined a bit about the two biggest All-Star games; Under Armour and Army. (Of course a lot has already changed). It really is horrible football, but it gives us a glimpse as to what we may have in the future with some of the commits.
So, let’s dive right into the U.S. Army All-American Game.
When and Where?
When: January 7 @ 1:00PM EST
Where: Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas
How Can You Watch?
LIVE on your local NBC station or you can watch online at NBC Sports. You can also watch via a mobile device by using the NBC Sports app. You’re Notre Dame fans- you know the drill.
Notre Dame Commits
The Irish have two verbal commits in this game and both are on the East Team:
- TE Cole Kmet
- OL Joshua Lugg
It will be interesting to watch Kmet and compare him to Brock Wright who played in the Under Armour game.
Announcement Pending
There are two Notre Dame targets that will be announcing their commitment in the game:
- WR Jamire Calvin
- OL Foster Sarell
As of right now, Notre Dame is merely a hat for show for both prospects, according to most experts. For Calvin, it’s probably going to be Nebraska, and for Sarell, it’s a battle between Stanford and Washington.
Guys That Got Away
While none of the following prospects were locks for Notre Dame, the Irish pursued them heavily and lost out. These are guys that were all “takes” and we need to be reminded of how cut-throat recruiting is in this era.
- WR Tarik Black
- LB Justin Foster
- WR Jeremiah Holloman
- S Devon Hunter
- WR Donovan Peoples-Jones
- CB Shaun Wade
- DB Salvon Ahmed
Prospects To keep A Close Eye On
There are a couple of guys that Notre Dame is still “in it” with that won’t be announcing:
- WR Oliver Martin
- DE Jarez Parks
Martin may very well be a Notre Dame lean right now, and he has been praised for his athleticism this week in San Antonio (sneaky fast).
Parks, on the surface, looks to be a long shot, but he has talked about the Irish recently and has befriended two Notre Dame commits that have been recruiting him hard- fellow Army All-American teammates, Joshua Lugg and Cole Kmet. I reserve hope until a visit is made.
