The preseason Amway Coaches Poll was released at noon on Thursday and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will start the season as the #9 team in the country.

The Amway Coaches Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of head coaches at FBS schools. The panel is chosen by random draw, conference by conference plus independents, from a pool of coaches who have indicated to the American Football Coaches Association their willingness to participate. Each coach submits a Top 25 with a first-place vote worth 25 points, second place 24, and so on down to one point for 25th.

Notre Dame was ranked #11 to start the season last year in the coaches poll and after all the football was played, Notre Dame also finished #11 in the last coaches poll.

Notre Dame has a handful of opponents inside the top 25 with:

#7 Stanford
#11 Michigan State
#17 USC

And another handful that received some votes:

Duke
Navy
Miami
Texas

While this poll will effectively become irrelevant once the playoff committee releases their rankings, it does provide a starting point and helps define the conversation of college football in the first month of play.

Notre Dame is coming off a very good 10-2 year with losses to Clemson and Stanford on the road, and to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. All three of those teams are inside the top 10 in this years poll.

Two questions:

  1. Was Notre Dame better than their record last year?
  2. Is Notre Dame ranked too high, too low, or just about right to start the season?
