Notre Dame Football Recruiting 2017: Running Backs Big Board

A couple of new offers have gone out since our last update. And one of those recruits has been trending ND's way.

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome back to the OFD recruiting Big Board for Fighting Irish Football. Today we will be taking a look at the running back position. Normally we would combine both the RB and QB Big Boards into one article. However, as you are most assuredly aware, the QB Big Board is currently empty.

Let's get to it.

Entering the Field

Connecticut athlete CJ Holmes added an offer from the Irish late last month. This is a guy who could also play receiver or safety at the next level. He's also the teammate of top WR target Tarik Black. CJ was in South Bend for the Irish Invasion, and he was reportedly the most impressive 2017 athlete in attendance. He had a spectacular time on his visit, and the Irish appear to have taken a huge lead in this recruitment. He says he still wants to take visits to Alabama and Penn State before making a final decision, but there has been speculation that he may end his recruitment during the Opening early next month. If this tweet that he made is any indication, he was already seriously considering "pulling the trigger" and committing to the Irish during his visit. Something to keep an eye on.

Florida APB CJ Cotman added his Irish offer just a couple of weeks ago. He is teammates with current Irish commit Dillan Gibbons at Clearwater Central Catholic, and that might play a factor in this recruitment. This CJ is another kid who could play numerous positions at the next level like running back, slot, or cornerback. Not much has been said about him and Notre Dame yet, so I'm keeping him at Cool for the time being. We'll see what happens.

In Play

Najee Harris remains committed to Alabama. The staff will continue to recruit him, but we're at a point a few weeks into the summer where no talk of any plans to visit Notre Dame have occurred. Oh, well. We knew this would be an incredibly long shot.

Cam Akers just wrapped up a visit to Ole Miss a few days ago. The Rebels may have taken the lead with this one. Other than that, he's one of new Buckeye commit Tate Martell's personal recruiting Big Board targets. You think I mean he just has a mental list of guys to recruit? No, no. He has an actual Big Board.

(p.s. - Yes, Wyatt Davis is announcing his decision today. Unfortunately, he's been trending Ohio State's way since his visit there last weekend.)

Stephen Carr remains a soft verbal to USC. While he continues to look around, I haven't heard his name in connection with Notre Dame for a while. I get the sense that he will stick with USC.

ND made the Top 10 for Anthony McFarland, but there still haven't been any signs that point to him ending up at ND. His leaders right now appear to be Maryland, Alabama, and Miami.

The battle for Toneil Carter appears to be down to Georgia and Texas A&M, with the Bulldogs in the lead. No word yet on when a decision will come, though.

Once a top competitor, Notre Dame has been fading lately in regards to Ty Chandler's recruitment. He's been making the rounds down south lately and Tennessee looks like they've been gaining ground on him. Ole Miss is still a player here as well.

Colin Wilson ended up visiting South Bend and working out for Irish Invasion. The visit went well for him, and Notre Dame is in somewhere in his top group right now. But reports are that while he looked good during workouts, CJ Holmes was clearly the more talented player.

Auburn appears to be in the lead for Devan Barrett. He's made a few visits over the past couple of months to schools like Michigan State, North Carolina, and Auburn -- but not to Notre Dame.

Robert Burns would have been considered a prime candidate to flip his commitment from Miami to Notre Dame this past weekend, had he been able to make the visit for Irish Invasion. He plans to make his way back up to South Bend sometime next month, though. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on him at that point in time.

That wraps up today's Big Board. In case you hadn't been able to piece it together yet -- if Notre Dame's going for a two-man RB class (which it sounds like they are), the best bets to join the class at this point in time are probably CJ Holmes and Robert Burns. And that would be a very good haul. But, of course, this is recruiting. Things can change in an instant. So we'll keep our eyes peeled for anything new and have that ready for you at the next Big Board update.
