BREAKING: #1 Dual-Threat QB Phil Jurkovec Commits to Notre Dame

New, 31 comments

Notre Dame has landed its first commit from the class of 2018. And it's a big one.

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The search for Notre Dame's class of 2018 quarterback ended early tonight when Gibsonia, PA Pine-Richland High School signal caller Phil Jurkovec verbally committed to the Fighting Irish. The 247 composite currently lists the 6'5"/200-pounder as the #1 ranked dual-threat quarterback and the #9 overall player in the country.

This commit comes as somewhat of a surprise tonight. Many expected Phil to make his decision no sooner than this fall. But he came to South Bend on a visit today with his decision already made.

Jurkovec is an elite talent at the QB position. During his sophomore season last fall he passed for over 2500 yards and 20 touchdowns to just 4 interceptions, while also rushing for over 1200 yards and another 11 scores.

Phil chose the Irish over offers from Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, Alabama, Tennessee, Clemson, and many others. Urban Meyer has been personally recruiting him pretty hard over the past couple of months, but ND was able to hold OSU off.

Phil's tape shows an athletically gifted prospect. He has the ability to earn yards on the ground, but he is at his best when throwing the ball down the field. He's accurate, has a strong arm, and a frame that NFL scouts look for. He could stand to improve his consistency and his release can get funky at times, but he is just a sophomore in high school right now. He's far ahead of most other prospects at this point in time both physically and technically. The Irish seriously landed a huge stud tonight.

The Irish are currently loaded with talent at QB, and that shouldn't change by the time Phil arrives on campus. Assuming Phil develops as he should, though, he should be the best of the bunch. Kids of his size who can move and throw as well as he can just don't grow on trees. We should, of course, expect a redshirt season from Phil. But after that, I would not be surprised one bit if he moves up the depth chart at an alarmingly fast rate.

This also starts up the 2018 class nicely. Getting a composite 5-star quarterback in the fold this early really sets things up well. The allure of playing alongside someone as talented as Jurkovec could get some more elite talent to give the Irish a closer look. It will be interesting to see how the 2018 class develops after getting possibly its commit right off the bat.

Welcome to the Irish family, Phil!
