The Week in Notre Dame Athletics: Women’s Hoops & Women’s Lacrosse Dominate

The Fighting Irish earned wins this past week in hockey, track & field, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse, softball, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball.

Without further ado, we give you the results of the last week's Irish match-ups and look ahead at what's on the schedule this week.

No. 7 Irish hockey (18-5-7, 14-2-2), now first place in Hockey East, dominated Maine in their 2 weekend matches, winning 4-1 on Friday and 5-1 on Saturday. We've got a full write-up on both games for you here from ndistops. For your viewing pleasure, here are the highlights from game one:

The Irish play Providence on the road this Friday (7:05 p.m. ET) and Saturday evening (7:05 p.m. ET).

Irish track & field participated in two meets over the weekend. At the Iowa State Invitational, Molly Seidel and Anna Rohrer took 1st and 2nd in the 5000m. The women's squad took 1st in shot put and long jump, 2nd in the 60mH and 2nd in high jump, and 3rd in the 800m.

At the SPIRE Division I meet, the women's squad came in 1st in the pentathlon, 2nd in the 4x400m relay, 5th in the 60mH, and 5th in high jump; the men's squad earned 5th in high jump and 3rd in pole vault.

The team hosts the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday.

No. 36 men's tennis overtook no. 54 Michigan, 6-1, on Saturday. This coming Sunday, they host Kentucky and Western Michigan.

No. 33 women's tennis split their last week's matches, first besting Pitt, 4-3, to open ACC competition, then falling to no. 8 Michigan, 5-2. They travel to West Lafayette to face Purdue on Wednesday. Saturday, they host Indiana and Louisville comes to town on Sunday.

No. 7 women's lacrosse snagged another strong win this week, this time over visiting Stanford, 13-9. Cortney Fortunato once again led the team with 4 goals, two of which came during a second-half string of 8 unanswered Irish goals that turned the game for Notre Dame.

The team next hosts Boston College this Sunday (12:00 p.m. ET).

Preseason no. 1 men's lacrosse was idle this past week after finishing exhibition play. The Irish face Georgetown in Atlanta, GA, on Saturday to open the season (11:30 a.m. ET).

Men's golf finished in second at the Yestingsmeier Match Play in Dade City, FL, last week. Eastern Michigan took the win, but it was a strong showing for the Irish. The team next travels to Tucson for the National Invitational Tournament on February 28th and 29th.

The women's golf team begins spring competition this Sunday and Monday at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, AZ.

Softball got their season started this past weekend in Tempe, AZ, where they went 3-2. The Irish bested Utah, 2-1, BYU, 4-2, and Georgia State, 10-4, and fell to Kentucky, 10-7, and Cal Berkeley, 8-7.

The Irish now head to Cathedral City, CA, for another round of games this weekend. They'll play Utah Valley and Washington on Friday, Cal Poly and UCLA on Saturday, and George Washington on Sunday.

Men's basketball (18-7, 9-4) earned another big home win over the weekend, this time over no. 13 Louisville, 71-66. Our review of the game from JoeSchu is here.

The Irish play Georgia Tech on the road this Saturday (8:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

No. 2 women's basketball (24-1, 12-0) overwhelmed no. 19/17 Miami, 90-69, at home on Sunday. Previous no. 2 South Carolina (23-1) fell to UConn on the 8th, pushing them down to 3rd and moving the Irish up a spot. Arike Ogunbowale led the Irish with 18 points against the Hurricanes in a win that extended the Notre Dame win streak to 17 games. Brianna Turner had 15 points and 6 blocked shots in a game that saw the Irish hold onto and expand a 10-point lead established in the opening five minutes.

Notre Dame next plays Wake Forest on the road on Thursday (7:00 p.m. ET). Monday, they visit Florida State (7:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

The no. 2 Irish fencing team just wrapped up participation in the Junior Olympics in Cleveland, OH. Up next for the team are the ACC Championships, which will be hosted by Notre Dame on the weekend of February 27th and 28th.

Men's and women's swimming & diving have been preparing for the ACC Championships, which begin this Wednesday and continue through Saturday for the women's squad in Greensboro, NC. The men's ACC Championships will run from next Wednesday through Saturday.

Baseball is back! The Irish travel to Santa Clara, CA, this Friday to play Santa Clara; the teams meet again on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
