To answer the question right away... maybe. It was first mentioned by Pete Sampson on Irish Illustrated’s podcast that Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were looking to take their spring camp to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines took their spring practice on the road last year and it serves a duel purpose:
- It provides a deeper and closer relationship for the players and coaches- much like having fall camp at a place like Culver Military Academy.
- It gives Notre Dame a chance to be present in front of the always in high demand, Florida high school recruits.
This would have to be done over Notre Dame’s spring break, and it probably won’t impact the Blue-Gold game except for the actual date of the game.
IMG is a sports academy for high school students and has some of the most highly ranked recruits from across the country transfer there to polish their skills. Notre Dame has recruited many IMG prospects over the years.
This isn’t a done deal, but it could be soon enough. Brian Kelly is making a lot of new and bold choices for a year that is clearly make or break for him at Notre Dame. The question I have is: will all these new staff members and a spring like that is possibly too much too quickly for the team to digest?
