In news that shocked no one (except for maybe Malik Zaire) Brian Kelly announced Everett Golson as the starter at quarterback against Rice.
Here's some more follow up on that bit of news:
BK: Eval from January to now, talked about EG's workouts, spring performance, leadership in summer, work in fall camp

That certainly sounds encouraging, but not at all surprising based on what everyone has been hearing. But is it a done deal?
BK: There was competition and will continue to be competition, hopes EG is the starter entire year but still a "merit based situation"

The pressure will be on Golson to perform. How did Malik Zaire take the news?
#NotreDame HC Brian Kelly: "I got the right answer from Malik. He wasn’t happy. If he gave me a hug, I’d be very disappointed."

Tough not to like the competitor that Zaire is. When does Kelly think we will see Zaire in game action?
BK: Zaire's first action will hopefully be with a big lead, barring injury

So maybe not as much of a competition unless Golson struggles. Speaking of Golson, how did he take the news?
Not much of a reaction from Everett Golson, per Kelly: "Matter of fact. 'OK, Coach.' " #NotreDame
