How'd the first weekend of football treat you?
Our leader after week one is Dmac4Real who went 18-5 against the spread. I'm pretty sure a 78% clip is unsustainable over the long haul but that's a heck of an opening week.
4pointshooter and 8footpenguin are just one game back while 6 others are only two games back.
This week we have 3 games without a spread. Let's hope we win them all this time (thanks, Georgia State).
Wake Forest (+3) at Boston College
Pick: Wake Forest
Why is BC favored in this game? I like the Demon Deacons as a (somewhat) surprise team in the ACC this year. Not so much with Boston College.
UCF (-24.5) at Florida International
Pick: FIU
FIU lost to Maryland by 33 points which isn't good. But have they fallen off a cliff so badly that they'll be blown out by UCF too? I don't know, I'll take the points for the home team.
Florida (-3) at Miami
Pick: Miami
This is a game the Hurricanes just have to have. It's about time they had a "we're back" type of game and Florida really isn't that good this year. Even if the Canes don't win I'm comfortable taking the home underdog again.
Houston (-3) at Temple
Pick: Houston
This is me using some strategy. I'm assuming everyone thinks Temple is a little better than we all thought and they'll play the Cougars tough. This time I'm not taking the home underdog.
Cincinnati (-8) at Illinois
Pick: Cincinnati
Illinois didn't beat a major conference team last year and barely scraped by Southern Illinois in week one. Illinois is really, really bad. There's no way they aren't beaten soundly by a quarterback named Munchie Legaux.
Bowling Green (-7.5) at Kent State
Pick: Bowling Green
Bowling Green is going to win the MAC this year. They just handed Tulsa their worst loss in a couple years and I'll take the Falcons against a Kent State team that struggled with a FCS team last weekend.
Miami, OH (+17) at Kentucky
Pick: Kentucky
I really don't want to take the Wildcats here, but they should be motivated to kick some butt after a humiliating defeat last week. SEC losing to Bobby Petrino is one thing, but a MAC school? They'll be fired up.
Western Kentucky (+13) at Tennessee
Pick: Western Kentucky
A week after beating Kentucky can Petrino cover the spread inside Neyland?
Army (+7.5) at Ball State
Pick: Ball State
Brady Hoke once coached at Ball State. Advantage, Cardinals.
Oregon (-22.5) at Virginia
Pick: Oregon
I wonder what Oregon's record is covering as a three-touchdown favorite against unranked teams over the past 4 or 5 years? I bet it's really, really good.
San Diego State (+28) at Ohio State
Pick: Ohio State
Man, that Buckeyes schedule just isn't getting any easier.
Utah State (-9.5) at Air Force
Pick: Utah State
Tough game to pick but Utah State played well in a close loss to Utah last week and should be a notch or two better than the Falcons.
Idaho (+28) at Wyoming
Pick: Wyoming
Wyoming nearly upset Nebraska in Lincoln last week with a boat load of offensive fireworks. Poor Idaho is coming off a 34 point loss to North Texas. Not good news for the Vandals.
South Carolina (+3) at Georgia
Pick: Georgia
Georgia will win and cover for two reasons. One, so I don't have to listen for the rest of the season why Aaron Murray can't beat ranked teams. Two, the SEC has a way of evening things out and it's much better for each of these teams to have 1-loss instead of having one team with 2 losses.
Duke (-4.5) at Memphis
Pick: Duke
The Blue Devils are coming off their first shutout in a really long time. Good for them.
Navy (+13.5) at Indiana
Pick: Indiana
That Hoosier offense is finally getting developed into something worthwhile. Navy doesn't usually fare well against spread offenses.
Syracuse (+16.5) at Northwestern
Pick: Syracuse
Don't trust that NW offense coming back from a trip to California.
West Virginia (+21) at Oklahoma
Pick: Oklahoma
It's going to be a rough year in Morgantown. I was impressed with Oklahoma's defense last week so they should be able to cover here.
Texas (-7) at BYU
Pick: Texas
BYU has quarterback issues (can't throw the ball worth a damn) and Texas has their defense turned around, I think.
Notre Dame (+4) at Michigan
Pick: Notre Dame
One last showdown in Ann Arbor. For a while.
Minnesota (-15.5) at New Mexico State
Pick: Minnesota
How'd the Gopher faithful feel about signing up for this game?
New Mexico (+6) at UTEP
Pick: New Mexico
I roll with Bob Davie.
Arizona (-10.5) at UNLV
Pick: Arizona
The spread feels pretty low, to me.
