Today begins the Early Signing Period for NCAA basketball, and the Notre Dame basketball family has added 5 new members. Mike Brey's two big men and Muffet McGraw's elite trio are profiled here.

The Early Signing Period began today, and the commitments in both the men's and women's recruiting classes of 2014 wasted no time in sending their National Letters of Intent to the Joyce Center. The five players profiled below fill major needs for their respective teams and make up strong classes in the inaugural ACC season for Notre Dame.

Mike Brey and his men's hoops program needed some big men in this class, and they delivered with the East coast duo of Bonzie Colson and Martin Geben:

PF Bonzie Colson - 6'5" - Barrington, RI - I profiled Colson here at the time of his commitment and think he has a very high ceiling for the Irish. He has had one of the best years in the country on the prep scene and, despite his short stature, brings a very developed, well-rounded game on both ends of the court. He needs to get into "college" shape, but once he does, I think he has all-ACC potential.

PF Martin Geben - 6'9" - Hagerstown, MD - Like Colson, I profiled Geben here when he committed. I likened his game to Rob Kurz, which is as high a compliment as I can give. He looks like he will fill a stretch 4 role for Notre Dame, as he brings good vision and shooting touch while maintaining a willingness on the boards. As a class, Geben and Colson compliment each other really well and bring different but very valuable and surprisingly developed skill sets to the power forward position.

Muffet McGraw and the Irish women's program welcome three players who comprise one of the top classes in the country.

PF Brianna Turner - 6'3" - Pearland, TX - Turner is an unquestioned top 5 player in the nation. She's tall, long, and is more athletic than just about any guard she will play against at the college level. Scouts love her, the USA basketball program loves her, and Muffet is definitely going to love pairing her with Taya Reimer for the next few years. That will be as dominant a post pairing as the women's college hoops world has ever seen.

PF Kathryn Westbeld - 6'2" - Kettering, OH - Westbeld, a five star player in her own right, is cut from more of a Devereaux Peters or Natalie Achonwa cloth. She will provide a nice compliment to the freakishly athletic Turner as the gritty low post presence as a tough defender and tenacious rebounder. The Irish frontcourt for the next few years will be scary good.

PG Mychal Johnson - 5'8" - Huntington, WV - Johnson is a four star point guard who earns rave reviews from scouts for her abilities to make her teammates better. She can score as well, but her athleticism, passing, and decision-making are all constantly cited as what makes her special as a floor general. Johnson will be a great understudy to freshman Lindsey Allen, as they seek to replace Skylar Diggins productivity at the point guard position in the next few years.

Congrats to both coaching staffs and the young men and women who will soon be joining the Notre Dame family!
