Notre Dame Fall Camp Practice Report: Saturday, August 4th

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame hit the practice field this morning for the first workout of fall camp.

It was a beautiful day as senior linebacker Manti Te'o was the first player through the gates. The Hawaiian tackling machine is sure hoping to set the tone during his last season in South Bend.

News & Notes

Irish Illustrated: First tempo drill went to QB Everett Golson. He was followed by Hendrix then Kiel. Rees did not participate in the opening drill, but did jump in later in the viewing portion.

Also, another heartening beginning to fall camp:

The first team defense featured: Lewis-Moore, Schwenke, Tuitt, Shembo, Fox, Te'o, Spond, Lo Wood, Jackson, Motta, and Slaughter.

The second team defense featured: Day, Nix, Hounshell, Ishaq, Calabrese, Grace, Councell, Jalen Brown, Josh Atkinson, Chris Salvi, and McCarthy.

Cierre Wood was withheld from drills. Kelly later cleared up the issue saying Wood still needs to fill out some medical paperwork.

Eric Hansesn from the South Bend Tribune has a practice report. Some quick highlights:

*It is confirmed that sophomore offensive lineman Brad Carrico has been placed on medical scholarship. Carrico had a foot condition that did not heal properly following surgery. He will still be on scholarship until he graduates but he will not count against the 85-man limit for the football team.

*Mike Golic was starting a right guard with the 1st team offense. The second team offensive line from left to right was: Prestwood, Hanratty, Hegarty, Nick Martin, and Tate Nichols.

BGI has a practice report from Saturday ($).

Irish Sports Daily also has a practice report for your reading pleasure.

Penn State commit WR Will Fuller was at today's practice, as were Irish commits Jaylon Smith, Mike Heuerman, and James Onwualu.

Just a couple things that stand out to me...

*We've got music for the reports now, yessss!

*I noticed a few players with white laces in their black cleats. That's something new.

*Davonte Neal (No. 19) is going to be special from day one.

*Justin Ferguson is out there doin' some work in a nice battle with fellow freshman Russell.

*DaVaris Daniels makes the one-handed catches look so easy.
