Coach Brian Kelly received his 1st verbal commitment for the 2014 class yesterday (July 3rd) from LB Greer Martini (Woodberry Forest, VA - Woodberry Forest). Martini is listed at 6'3" and 210 lbs.
Martini was offered by the staff after camping at Notre Dame last week and holds offers from Maryland and NC State. He was high school teammates with current Irish freshman safety C.J. Prosise and 2013 target Doug Randolph. Martini was named first team all-state in Virginia after his sophomore (2011) season.

Impact:
Immediate Future:
Martini is currenly listed anywhere from 6'3" to 6'4" and 210-220 lbs by the various services-and he is just going into his junior year of high school. Considering he won't step foot on campus for another two years, he has ample time to continue to grow and add weight in order to contribute right away for the Irish.
Long Term/Career:
During his sophomore season, Greer played primarily as an inside linebacker (based on his highlights) but is listed as an outside linebacker by most of the services. Right now, I think he could project to either outside linebacker spots or at the WILL inside position. He looks very natural dropping into pass coverage and was consistently around the ball. His ultimate position will likely be dictated by whether or not he continues to grow-as he could potentially even grow into a defensive end.
Like most talented prep players, he relies too much on natural ability at the high school level. I would like to see him wrap up the ball carrier a bit better. Given that he was named to the first team all-state squad as a sophomore, he has a high ceiling and should continue to develop into an excellent defender.
Welcome to Notre Dame Greer!
