CB Devin Butler is Irish!

Coach Brian Kelly received his 10th verbal commitment for the 2013 class today from CB Devin Butler (Washington, DC - Gonzaga). Butler is listed at 6'1" and 180 lbs with a 4.54 forty yard dash time.

Butler chose the Irish over offers from Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin. He also had offers from basically the entire Big Ten, ACC and Big East.

Impact:

Immediate Future:

Butler is a cornerback that fits Bob Diaco’s profile perfectly—big, physical and athletic. He should add some immediate depth in the secondary, but it will be a challenge for him to crack the two-deep as a freshman. Like most defensive backs, I think he gets a lot of reps on special teams before seeing significant action on defense.

Long Term/Career:

Devin definitely has some room to add weight, and I think he would probably need to get up to around 200 lbs to be fully effective at the CB spot on the Irish defense. He shows great anticipation and change of direction in coverage, especially in zone. He is a physical presence against the run, which is a big asset for CBs in this scheme.

One thing I think he needs to work on is wrapping the ball carrier up. I saw too many shoulder tackles on his highlight film. Other than that, he is a very dynamic player on the field and should have a very productive career in South Bend.

Welcome to Notre Dame Devin!
