I want to begin this post by congratulating the Lady Irish on a phenomenal season. This squad was a special group and fought like true warriors. They did Our Lady's University proud and we here at One Foot Down applaud Skylar Diggins and company on another special season.
Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims led the Lady Bears to that elusive 40-0 perfect season as they beat Notre Dame 80-61 in the 2012 Women's National Championship.
A quick recap after the jump
Griner had another monster effort posting 26 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks (including 10 more shot alterations) and her teammate Sims chipped in 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists to power their team to an early lead and huge second half push that gave them an insurmountable lead for the whole second half.
Skylar Diggins did what she could by posting 20 points but her fellow guard Natalie Novosel, who had 28 points the last time these two teams met, was limited to 0/11 shooting and just 5 points from the FT line and the Irish could not get much offense from anywhere else as Devereaux Peters was in foul trouble yet again going up against Griner.
I won't elaborate on the game. I truly feel for our ladies. They came back after a devastating loss at last year's finals against A&M and got all the way back to this stage only to face an indomitable force in Griner.
Skylar Diggins will be back and Notre Dame will play at a high level again next season, but it sure hurts tonight. It hurts a lot.
