DE/TE Jacob Matuska is Irish!

Coach Brian Kelly received his 2nd commitment for the 2013 recruiting class today from DE/TE Jacob Matuska (Columbus, OH - Bishop Hartley). Matuska visited for the mini Junior Day last weekend and has been considered a Notre Dame lean for some time. He is listed at 6'5", 240 lbs and runs a 4.70 40 yard dash.

Matuska is being recruited mainly to play Defensive End in Bob Diaco's 3-4 alignment, but offers the athleticism to move to Tight End if needed. He definitely fits the "Big Skill" profile that the staff is looking to fill during this cycle.

Impact:

Immediate Future:

His immediate impact depends on (a) which position he ultimately plays at the college level, and (b) how much weight he can put on before coming to Notre Dame in the summer of 2013.

If he stays at TE (thought to be his preference), he would probably only need to get to about 250 and could see some early action as a blocking TE. Otherwise, to play at DE in the Irish defense he would probably sit out his freshman year to bulk up and refine technique while learning the system.

Long Term/Career:

His highlight film (the one I could find anyway) shows some good catching ability and tenacity as a blocker while playing TE. If he does end up lining up on the defensive side of the ball, he will likely need to bulk up into the 280-300 lb range to be durable and effective at end. He shows plenty of athleticism and a high ceiling, so I can see him growing into a very effective player on either side of the ball.

Welcome to Notre Dame Jacob!
