As I said when filling out my ballot, Notre Dame's position in this week's ballot really doesn't matter. After the game in Norman they're either going to be firmly entrenched as a national title contender or on the second-tier with a bunch of very good one-loss team who likely have no claim at the national championship.

It is worth noting that people are ready to elevate the Irish. They're firmly in the top five, and are actually closer to third place Oregon than they are sixth place LSU. I'm not sure if a win Saturday night would move Notre Dame past any of the teams in front of them - Kansas State has already won against the Sooners, Florida has the change for another great win versus Georgia, everyone loves them some Ducks and Tide - but it would help to build a wall between them, some of the other undefeated teams (Oregon State) and some of the more heralded one-loss squads (LSU, USC).
