The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a roster full of players, and we want to talk about them all. One Foot Down’s player profile series will take a look at every single one of them, and hopefully we all learn a little bit more about these guys, and Notre Dame’s chances for the upcoming 2019 season.
#29 Ovie Oghoufo, DE
The rising Sophomore from Lathrop Village, MI, was heralded as a bit of a project and raw athlete when he committed. However, he has shown to be somewhat of a rising star after enrolling early a year ago. He has bulked up to over 230 lbs and was awarded the defensive scout team player of the year last season. This is a great sign for someone who is a raw athlete, as a high motor/intense effort with that skillset will get you on the field. He will look to get some backup work this year and potentially shine on special teams.
Taylor Swift, Chicago, Bon Jovi
Thinking of him running down the field on special teams like a mad man and having gold specs fly off his helmet. That would be neat.
Hey Dog Hey
Australian Cattle Dog-These dogs have very high motors and are definitely scrappy. They are not the most polished dogs, but are intense!
2019 Outlook
Ovie should not play tons of meaningful minutes on defense this year because of the wealth of talent above him including Julian Okwara and Daelin Hayes. With the most depth the Irish may ever have had at defensive end, Oghoufo will look to be a staple of the special teams units. He flashed throughout the spring during these drills, and it is abundantly clear that he does not feel he is above special teams. As a raw athlete with great size/speed, he should thrive on all units. Look for him to be one of the leading tacklers on the kickoff unit this year as well. I am very interested to see see how he performs in mop up duty minutes in blowout games. He will definitely go full tilt and I think he will rack up a sack or 2 as teams try to throw late in desperation attempts. He has the makings of someone who could and should be a very solid player for the Irish in years to come.
Youtube Hot Fire
Though not youtube, this clip made waves this Spring as it shows great effort as well and some very powerful hands. It also shows a guy who prides himself on effort.
