Welcome back to the OFD Big Board for July 8, 2014.
With Dew-Treadway committing as well (see below) there's likely only room left for an elite prospect on the interior. Neville Gallimore seems to be zeroing in on a bunch of northern and eastern teams with Notre Dame among the handful of teams.
One player who has been quiet lately but is still a target down the road is Joseph Wicker. He's scheduled to come to South Bend for an official visit in the fall and has mentioned the Irish among his favorites in the past. It's assumed a Pac-12 team like UCLA would be tough to beat but the Bruins have yet to offer.
As noted in The Opening thread yesterday one of the nation's top defenders in Kahlil McKenzie will be committing this week.
We've had a flurry of activity at defensive end since last month. Notre Dame snagged up (IL) Micah Dew-Treadway .860 on June 11th in between the commits of Tiassum and Taylor.
Ohio State picked up verbals from both (MN) Jashon Cornell .982 and (OH) Dre'Mont Jones .893 to give their class a big boost up front. Florida State picked up the commitment of (SC) Michael Barnett .899.
The latest offer is to Canton Kaumatule who comes from Manti Te'o's high school Punahou in Honolulu. He's long been linked to Stanford but has nice things to say about Notre Dame. We'll see if he end up visiting in the future.
This position is one where the coaching staff is looking for a major impact edge rusher. Austin Bryant and Byron Cowart are two studs from the South that came to the Irish Invasion and are receiving major attention from Notre Dame.
Bryant may be committing later this summer and is believed to be leaning towards Clemson. Cowart looks to be taking official visits in the fall and deciding at a much later date.
A pair of linebackers remain high on Notre Dame's board. Asmar Bilal made several visits to Notre Dame in the spring and summer and is coming off a round of visits to South Bend, Ann Arbor, and Evanston. He should be coming to a decision soon and the Irish are favored there.
Tevon Coney was at Notre Dame for the Irish Invasion and seems to be warming quite a bit to playing for the Irish. He really likes Florida too and the Gators will surely offer stiff resistance.
