The Week in Notre Dame Athletics: Soccer Bests No. 1

The Irish earned impressive victories this past week in women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, and men’s tennis.

Without further ado, we bring you the results of the last week's Irish match-ups.

Soccer: The no. 8 women's team (6-1-0, 2-0 ACC) claimed two big wins this past week, first as they opened ACC play against North Carolina State with a come-from-behind 3-1 road victory. After going down 1-0 in the 6th minute on a free kick, the Irish earned a 22-8 edge in total shots and a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Sunday, the Irish downed no. 1 North Carolina, 1-0, with a single first-half goal from freshman midfielder Morgan Andrews and a shutout behind freshman goalie Kaela Little. Notre Dame trailed in shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks, but kept everything out of the net and the early goal carried them through.


The Irish face Syracuse at home on Thursday (7:00 p.m. ET).

The no. 4 men's team (2-0-2, 1-0-1 ACC) earned a 3-0 road win over Syracuse this past Friday. The Irish out-shot Syracuse 17-4 and had a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal, with 11 corner kicks to the opponent's 5.


Tuesday night, the Irish battle Michigan at home (7:30 p.m. ET). They then face Boston College on the road Saturday night.

Volleyball: The Irish (4-3) turned it around this past weekend at the Shamrock Invitational, where they defeated Loyola-Chicago (3-0), Oakland (3-1), and Auburn (3-2) to claim the tournament title at home. The Irish trailed 2-0 to Auburn before climbing back behind Jeni Houser's 18 kills and 13 blocks.


The Irish face North Dakota State and Georgia this Saturday, then Kansas on Sunday in Lawrence, KS.

The women's golf team earned third place behind Michigan State and Ohio State in the Mary Fossum Invitational as they began team competition this past weekend. Ashley Armstrong tied for 2nd overall and Kelli Oride tied for 7th in a large field.

This weekend, the Irish compete in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.

The men's golf team had the week off from competition, but will return to play next Monday when they host the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.

The men's tennis team opened their fall slate competing in the OFCC and Vredevelt invitationals this past weekend. After struggling against elite competition on day one of the OFCC Invitational (the Irish claimed only 1 of 8 singles matches and 1 of 7 doubles), Notre Dame won 16 of 20 singles matches and 1 of 3 doubles matches. At the Vredevelt Invitational, they earned 18 wins in 24 singles matches and 6 wins in 8 doubles matches, as well as an impressive 4 of 8 spots on the all-tournament team.

The Irish next compete in the ITA All-American Championships and the Bobby Bayliss Invitational 2 weeks from now.

Softball fell to Illinois State, 21-14, in a 9-inning exhibition match this past weekend. The Irish next face Purdue and Butler at home on Sunday (12:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET).

Irish cross country took the week off from competition, but competes in the Notre Dame-hosted 34th annual National Catholic Championships this weekend.

The women's tennis team begins fall play at the Wolverine Invitational and the Ball State Fall Invitational this weekend.
