Here's a little something to catch up on while watching the Masters this weekend. The latter half of the week was pretty busy so I will scale the comments back a bit to fit it all in here.
As always starting elsewhere and ending in South Bend.
Spring Football is winding down for many programs across the country. Five 2013 Notre Dame opponents play their spring games on TV today. The spring football games at Michigan, Arizona State, Oklahoma, USC and Stanford will all air this afternoon. Scouts up! A link to the full schedule is below.
Willie Taggart wins the award for most creative and interesting spring football game format. The format includes a draft, free agency, and a prize for the victors.
Aside from the bragging rights that come with victory, the USF Football program will hold a cookout for the entire staff before the end of the spring semester. The Spring Game’s winning team will feast on steak and potatoes, while the losing team will be stuck with hot dogs and beans.
Is it just me or does it seem like there is a new uniform unveiling every week these days? Murtaugh talked about these new Cal uniforms in 5WF this week. As far as "new" uniforms go this one is pretty tame. Outside of some minor details and the silly new bear logo it pretty much looks the same. Are helmets with a plain old regular finish going to be obsolete soon? It seems like a lot of teams are either going with a matte finish or something super shiny.
UConn got in on the updated logo action. I have to say, I don't really understand the changing of the logos. Whatever.
If BK ordered 12-0 rings I'm guessing there would be a lot more stories about it...
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer promised them rings for an undefeated season. And so the Buckeyes got their rings. A couple coaches, including receivers coach Zach Smith, tweeted out a picture of the ring, along with the traditional Gold Pants for beating Michigan.
I can't wait to read all about how this is going to make the SEC even awesomer y'all.
Elsewhere in the SEC.
Roll Damn Tide.
Auburn fans will roll the two live oaks at Toomer's Corner for the final time after the Tigers' spring game on April 20, when a design concept will be unveiled. The live oaks will be removed three days later. University of Alabama fan Harvey Updyke Jr. was sentenced to spend six months in jail and five years on supervised probation after pleading guilty in the poisoning of the trees.
So USA Today reported this about the Honey Badger's interviews with prospective NFL employers.
During one visit, Mathieu was asked how many drug tests he failed before he was suspended in college. According to an assistant coach for the team, Mathieu responded: "I quit counting at 10. I really don't know."
LSU quickly issued a rebuttal to the USA Today story on Mathieu that really doesn't rebut anything at all.
"It is irresponsible and shows a lack of integrity for anyone to disclose medical information regardless of how it was gathered," Mathieu said.
I really don't know why I find this so amusing but I do.
Meet the budding icon of postmodern college football recruiting art. SB Nation talked to MSU defensive coordinator Geoff Collins, the man behind the now-famous "Can of SWAG" and "You're a Baller" recruiting notes, and his head coach.
Speaking of recruiting...
Bobby Elliott was named in this investigation but it doesn't sound like much of anything is going to come of it.
Predicting the COI's response to virtually anything is a fool's errand; like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never quite know what you're going to get when it comes to the NCAA and handing out sanctions. But given that this appears to be a case of unfortunate negligence rather than an intentional flaunting of NCAA rules, a la Kelvin Sampson -- and of a rule the NCAA itself is trying to eliminate from its handbook, no less -- it's hard to see the Cyclones suffering anything more than the proverbial slap on the wrist.
Former Notre Dame star Bryant Young is leaving Will Muschamp's staff at Florida to spend more time with his family.
Young joined Florida's staff in 2011 after spending a year at San Jose State (2010) and a year at Notre Dame (2009). He assisted then-defensive coordinator Dan Quinn along the defensive line. Quinn resigned after last season to become the defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks.
Davonte Neal and Gunner Kiel both found new homes this week. Best of luck to both players, I hope that it works out for them. Keith Arnold has more on both transfers.
"The school didn't have the courtesy to have the athletic director (Jack Swarbrick) call the athletic director at ASU to discuss it," Patterson said. "They had their PR guy call (ASU's media relations office) to give us a message Friday afternoon while everybody was out of town at the Final Four. "At least in the little Catholic town I grew up in (Beaver Dam, Wisconsin) the good nuns wouldn’t have thought that was a very appropriate way to honor your word."
Mark May has Jack Swarbrick's back on this one.

UHND rolled out a two part schedule breakdown this week. Those are always fun.
Lisa Kelly is publishing a book this summer that looks at the lives of 25 Notre Dame football players.
I won't lie, I really wish that I was at the Coaches' Clinic this weekend. Here's Bill Belichick on what he thinks of Notre Dame football players.
"They’re all smart," Belichick said. "They’re tough. If you get through four years here ... It takes a lot from a kid, a lot of discipline. They’re smart, well-versed. They have more than football in their life."
Brady Quinn and the Seattle Seahawks have officially finalized their deal to make him the backup quarterback to starter Russell Wilson. Apparently Matt Leinart also tried out for this spot. Awkward.
I'm addicted to Sirius XM. We have it in both vehicles, on our phones and in our house. My CD collection is getting dusty...
"SiriusXM's Notre Dame Town Hall with Brian Kelly" will take place on Thursday, April 18 (6:30 p.m. ET) and will air live on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, channel 91.
Have a great weekend!
