Will Big Ten's Scheduling of Stronger Opponents Work?

After Week 1, the B1G was 10-2 against out of conference opponents, losing only to Alabama (Michigan) and Ohio (Penn State). However, the Ohio loss, and squeaking by UNLV by three (Minnesota), North Illinois by 1 (Iowa), N. Iowa by 5 (Wisconsin), Syracuse by 1 (Northwestern) and Indiana State by 7 (Indiana) did not lend savvy gamblers to push their chips onto B1Gs for a tougher Week 2 schedule.

Week 2 brought only four cupcakes, one academy, and seven BCS conference teams with many games away to a conference boasting four of the top eighteen ranked teams in college football.

Let's see how they did.

Cupcakes (4-0)

Indiana proved itself better than former FCS team, Massachusetts, by 39.

Minnesota bettered a FCS team, New Hampshire, by 37.

Michigan State (#11) battered MAC in-state, Central Michigan, by 34.

Ohio State (#14) had an easy time at home against Central Florida by 15.

Indiana and Michigan State played away games.

Academy Opponent (1-0)

Michigan had a hard time at home stopping their academy foe, Air Force, but prevailed late in the fourth quarter by 6 pts.

BCS Level Teams (1-6)

Penn State could not put Virginia (ACC) away, losing by 1 point away, missing four FGs. Their veteran FG kicker had transferred to Texas.

Purdue lost on a last minute FG to Notre Dame (IND) in South Bend.

Iowa lost by 3 points to in-state Iowa State (Big 12) in Iowa City for the first time in ten years.

Wisconsin (#13) was shocked on the road against Oregon State, not projected as a PAC 12 division contender.

Nebraska (#16) couldn't prevail against UCLA (#22, PAC 12) in L.A., losing by 6 pts.

Illinois had little chance against Arizona State (PAC 12) in Tempe, losing by 31.

Only Northwestern won, beating Vanderbilt (SEC), with a fourth quarter comeback at home, by 10 pts.

B1G Record against BCS level conferences (1-8)

Independents (0-1)

ACC (0-1)

Big 12 (0-1)

PAC 12 (0-3)

SEC (1-1)

Big East (0-1)

Fortunately, E. Michigan, W. Michigan, N. Illinois, Ball State, N. Iowa, Massachusetts, Colorado State, Arkansas State and Utah State appear on this week's schedule - as well as Navy and BC - to brighten up an OOC record. All those games are home games.
