I was very critical of Brian Kelly and staff early on as Michigan and U$C came out the gates swinging for the fences and getting elite player after player and now it looks like they are finished with their 2013 recruiting cycles with probably the number 1 and 2 recruiting classes this season.
Brian Kelly and company really exploded on the scene after the Irish held their Junior Day and have been rolling every since. With Will Fuller giving his verbal a couple of days ago that gives BK 19 guys with a max of only being able to take 22-23 I think. I love Fuller because of what he can bring to the program. I like him as a CB prospect but he has the best hands of any skill player on our board this year and how this kid is only rated as a 3 star prospect to me is crazy. Scout has him rated as a 4 star WR but it seems that they rate way too many kids at a 4 star level when some don't deserve it. They got this one right with Fuller but that is as far as I will go with them. ESPN usually get's it right but they have Fuller at the 138th best WR in the country which is also crazy. I also think that L.J. Moore will be Irish pretty soon. Moore is an outstanding CB prospect who already has the look of a division 1 CB at 6'1 180lbs. I think most sites have him as a 4 star kid.
If and when Moore comes on board he will give this class 20 verbals leaving very few scholarships to give out.
What I am about to say will probably get some negative feedback but I always speak my mind on here. Brian Kelly offered more scholarships this cycle than any Notre Dame coach I can remember and there are still a lot of kids out there who have scholarship offers from Notre Dame and and some are elite kids but there is still quite a few who are not. I am not saying that the kids that the coaches offered are not good players but with the very few spots left why not do what U$C is doing for our last few scholarships available this cycle. If I am Kelly, I am only allowing ELITE kids to fill out these last 3 spots (I say 3 because I really believe that Moore will give his verbal if he is able to make an unofficial visit this month. Moore also has set up his official visit for the Michigan night game). Brian Kelly does not have a problem with turning kids away even though he made a mistake by letting TE Taylor McNamara go to Oklahoma last year as well as DT Tommy Schutt go to Ohio State (Schutt gave his verbal to Penn St I think before that damn Urban Meyer flipped him). Water under the bridge I know!
I know I am being a hypocrite by saying that Kelly should turn away kids this year but blast him for doing it last year BUT this class has the potential of being a true impact class if Kelly can get a couple more elite kids to jump on the bandwagon. Some think that elite kids want to play for elite coaches but I think diffrent. I believe that elite kids want to play with other elite players. Look at the RB prospect Jamel James, he has never stepped foot on the campus but because he see's that Notre Dame is starting to stack some major talent he decides to jump on board and this kid is a very good prospect and could have went pretty much anywhere. Notre Dame very rarely get's any kids from Texas but if you are able to bring in elite players, kids will flock to Notre Dame. While the academics are harder and the social life is pretty much zero in South Bend, elite football players will come. These kids spend more time with each other over the summer than they do with their families going to all these diffrent camps and 7 on 7 or what not. They strike up life long friendships and with the internet, facebook and twitter they all know what is going on at every major program when it comes down to recruiting. These kids are noticing what Kelly has been doing in his three years even with the departures of some MAJOR talent like Shepherd and Lynch.
I think that Jaylon Smith is the best player in the country regardless of position and along with Alex Anzalone and Malik Zaire and company this current class is in the top 5 with the potential of jumping into the top 3. U$C and the class they have will not be matched by any program this year and could go down as the best ever. With them and Michigan already pretty much maxed out Notre Dame is in a great position to close with a FURY. I would love for BK to get another WR and two more DB. I would love to get Treadwell, Priest Willis and of course LJ Moore. The Irish have a very good chance to get these 3 players and if BK can hold this class together Notre Dame could have it's best class ever.....................in my opinion setting this team to make a run at a BCS BOWL and even a Title run in 2013.
