Davonte Neal Makes the Count 89
Davonte Neal is the 17th signee and 18th member of the class when you count Badger. The updated roster breakdown is embedded in the Recruiting Central Widget.
18 Signees (Includes Badger)
25 Freshmen (Includes Carlisle)
19 Sophs
15 Juniors
12 Seniors eligible for a 5th
89 Total
So at a minimum 4 of the 12 Seniors that are eligible for a 5th will not get that option.
Cave, KLM, Slaughter, Goodman and Golic Jr. appear to be in.
That leaves room for 3 of the following 7.
Walker (Already gave his number to Kiel)
Clelland
H Williams
Newman
Posluszny
McDonald
McCarthy
Who makes the cut?

Don't Forget the possibility
That if a senior doesn’t want to come back, the scholarship may be given to a walk on a la Nate Montana. I think Joe Schmitt came in as a preferred, so would he be in line next perhaps?
I think that's more likely than some of the names on that list...
far more important to the team than Deion Walker and David Posluszny.
I think Dan McCarthy is a sure thing to come back as well.
And on the same vein,
Where did Prestwood’s scholly come from last summer? Did we still have an extra one hanging around at that point?
I thnk as soon as Prestwood was enrolled at ND, the schollie counted against ND's total
Kind of like how Carlisle counts against ND now.

On teh Twitterz
Take Hafis and give the other schollie or two
To Schmidt, Salvi, or Eamon.
If it ain't 2,000 words long, I ain't posting it.
Id give it to salvi
This is going possibly sound SEC dirty but…..Salvi has 1 year left i believe. Thats a scholarship for only 1 year. Leaving another scholarship open to next years class, which would be nice for numbers wise, as we came up short this year with only 17 (or 18 with Badger). Then give the other 2 to McCarthy and Clelland. If we gave a scholly to Schmidt hed take one up for the next 3 years. Eamon would take up 4. I am really glad those kids were willing to join the program, but at the same time, there is a reason they only got preferred walk-ons. They both had other scholarship options so i wouldn’t feel waiting with the oklahoma rule (not giving scholarships to walk-ons until they have cracked the 2 deep). Its not completely fair, but to me it makes the most sense.
That would be the shrewd thing to do

Plus Salvi did work at Bengal Bouts tonight and is generally an animal on ST.

Scholarships are one-year commitments for the University and for all universities, right?
So we could give scholarships to one or more walk-ons for this year only. I don’t think that’s anywhere near SEC-type dirt. Didn’t we give Nate Montana a scholarship for like one year?

I respectfully disagree.
No one complained when Weis did it for a year at a time. It’s a walk-on who’s already on campus, so you haven’t duped him into committing under false pretenses. You’re rewarding a guy with something that he would not have had otherwise. It’s a windfall for him. You’ve never misrepresented anything to him. You’re not now and never have told him that he’d have a scholarship for multiple years.

Yes.
I would have to dig back into some things but I’m pretty sure Weis gave one walk on per year a schollie and they weren’t all seniors.

I agree that the "preferred" walk ons are likely to end up with 1-2 of these.
This should all be getting announced pretty soon.

I would give
McCarthy, Schmidt and Salvi scholies. Eamon is still preferred Walk-on for 2012.

Sounds like we are going to roll with 84 on scholarship.
Per 247: “not official” but KLM, Slaughter, Cave, Golic Jr., Goodman and D. McCarthy all noted as 5th years. Toss in Salvi and that’s seven 5th year players for the fall.
2013
18 Freshmen (Includes Badger)
25 Sophomores (Includes Carlisle)
19 Juniors
15 Seniors
7 5th years
84 total

Leaves room for a surprise transfer in the summer, right?
I mean its not like that hasn’t happened before….
I don't tweet often--but when I do, you can be sure it isn't important.

Jim
You got someone on mind, or just hoping for another Prestwood./Carlisle to come on down?
He's 3 weeks old and screaming.

No one in mind...just yet
But several names surfaced before Carlisle was made official, so you never know. One thing that we have seen is that this staff makes an impression on these young men, even if they end up elsewhere. Why not leave the door open?
