Coach Brian Kelly received his 3rd verbal commitment for the 2014 class today from DT Jay Hayes (Brooklyn, NY – Poly Prep). Hayes is listed at 6’5” and 270 lbs.
Hayes committed to Notre Dame over several reported offers that included Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State and Oregon. He attends the same high school as former Irish Center Eric Olsen.

Impact:
Immediate Future:
From a highlight standpoint, there isn't much to go on for Hayes. The clip linked above consists of one play, but it is a really, really good play. Considering he is 6'5" and 270 lbs as a high school junior, he could conceivably step on campus and contribute immediately in the defensive line rotation. The one potential hurdle to early playing time is the fact that he plays football in New York City, which isn't known for developing D-1 ready talent.
Long Term/Career:
Hayes was being recruited by some schools (and is listed by some services) as an offensive lineman, but has stated that he prefers to play on the defensive side of the ball in college. He fits the "power" profile for a defensive lineman in Bob Diaco's scheme, and based on his raw skills and size, he should have a long and productive career for the Irish.
Welcome to Notre Dame Jay!
