Alex Anzalone is one of the best players in the country regardless of position with most recruiting services having him in their own top 50 overall. Even when Anzalone gave his verbal to the IRISH back in July there were still a few college football insiders who said that the Florida Gators were still in play. One would think that the opportunity to play along the best LB to come out of the high school ranks in the last 5 years in Jaylon Smith could sway Anzalone to stay with BRIAN KELLY and the IRISH.
While nothing has came out of the Anzalone camp about flipping to Florida the signs are CLEAR that he will ultimately end up in Gainesville where his father played. When Anzalone backed out of the visit for the BYU game saying something along the lines of "his fathers work schedule" I knew then that writing was on the wall. If this was false Anzalone would say something you would have to believe. After Florida's big win over LSU a couple of weeks ago Mike Farrell was on record saying that Florida had " 2 silent defensive verbal commitments" to come out of the game with some already saying that Anzalone has already filled out his enrollment paperwork.
NOTRE DAME losing high caliber recruits is nothing new to fans but usually it's because of their play on the field but BRIAN KELLY has his squad at number 5 heading into a football game against Oklahoma that the entire country will be watching. If this IRISH team can find a way to beat oklahoma on Saturday night could this have a effect on Alex Anzalone, could his relationship with the other kids already on board possibly have an effect on Anzalone. I doubt it but anything is possible when dealing with these recruits this time of the year. His parents want him in Florida so more than likely this is where he will end up come signing day.
Anytime you lose a player like Anzalone it stings a little but at the end of the day BRIAN KELLY has proved that the train does not stop rolling just because it loses a passenger here and there along the way. The IRISH still have 4 other very good LB with Jaylon Smith falling in the "great category" in my opinion. Danny Mattingly who had his share of rumors last week that he might be jumping off the IRISH bandwagon came out quickly and put out those rumors can do some of the same things that Anzalone brings to the field. Some think Mattingly is a better TE prospect than LB but I think he will play defense for the IRISH.
I thought that NOTRE DAME could possibly be in the mix for Stanford verbal Isaac Savaiinaea who is an excellent LB prospect that the staff has stayed in touch with and who was personally recruited by Manti Teo' could possibly take Anzalones spot if in deed Anzalone takes his talent to Gainesville but even that does not look likely now.
