CB Ronald Darby Decommits from Notre Dame

Nitro is gone.

Maybe the fastest player in the country has re-opened his recruitment just a few weeks before National Signing Day.

At the moment it is not clear if Notre Dame is still in the running, but remember this coaching staff will likely not go down without a fight if the door is still left slightly ajar.

Use this as your place to vent, but be respectful.

Darby may end up Irish in the end....

WHAT HAPPENED........

Darby gives this team speed that it so desperately needs. We need Darby in South Bend. I know Notre Dame has Shepherd and maybe Yuri Wright on board but come on. I hope this kids leaves the door open for this coaching staff and Darby just wants to make sure about his choices. If a kid de-commits this late in the game it means that another program already has their hooks in him………………………………DAMN, this class was starting to look special……………THIS HURTS!!

Surprisingly Not Upset

I wouldn’t trade Darby for any other CB on our board, but he’s been wavering for quite some time now. After Lynch, Tuitt, Prestwood, and Carlisle, if it’s humanly possible to bring Darby back into the fold, this staff will do it. Even failing that, we’ll end up with an excellent consolation prize (Wright, Poole, etc.)

The schools Darby is allegedly considering offer vastly inferior academics to ND (especially FSU) and his parents are supposedly still in our corner. I wouldn’t rule out a Tuitt/ Lynch-like return, so think twice before posting anything negative about the kid.

by Whisk3yjack on Jan 9, 2012 12:18 AM EST reply actions

ALWAYS think twice before posting something negative about a kid.

Think twice, then think again, then don’t do it. They’re kids picking where they want to go to school. At times we may think that some of them act like little sh!theads. Think about how much of a little sh!thead you (you the reader, not Whiskeyjack) used to be—and how much of a big sh!thead you can still be. And a recruit is not a little sh!thead just because he doesn’t want to go to ND. It ain’t for everybody—just the great ones.

Word is he wants to run track

And all of the schools he’s looking at have top 25 track programs. Not sure where ND’s program ranks, though.

by burger23 on Jan 9, 2012 12:31 AM EST reply actions

My ignorance is obvious here...

but why does it matter what the track team is ranked? It’s an individual sport, he can run just as fast at Notre Dame as he can anywhere else.

As with football

Coaching matters. Consistent Top 25 track team connotes Top 25 coaching.

Yes FSU

Has one of the top Sprint coaches in the World( . Ken Harnden) I thought from day one track and field would play a part in his decision.

by spiboy on Jan 9, 2012 12:34 AM EST reply actions

and FSU has a top 5 track team

winning recent national championships, etc. Darby is also good friends with Marvin Bracy—both played in the UAAA game—who is an FSU commit. We’ll see what happens. Darby isn’t a guy you turn away if he’s interested.

Championship!

Well why didn't you say something sooner?

You should have told Coach Kelly. I blame his decommitment on you.

by Mouth of the South on Jan 9, 2012 10:31 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Ahhhh yes, the final weeks leading up to NSD. Always an adventure!

Yesterday we add Shumate and get a surprising transfer from Carlisle. Today, we get this news. The only certainty is that there will likely be another couple of wins and losses on the recruiting front prior to NSD.

Apologies for being a broken record on this but like Whisk3yjack said, at times like these it is especially important to think twice before posting. These recruits and their families read this stuff too. Just keep the level of discussion where we normally do here and we shouldn’t run into any issues.

I am sure that the staff is all over this and if there is any way to bring Darby back into the fold prior to NSD they will do it.

One last thing, venting in the comments here or on a message board elsewhere should be avoided. But contacting these recruits directly, either positively or negatively, via social media or any other means should NOT happen. Ever. Don’t be that guy.

Hang in there, hopefully BK will get the staff settled this week and the final pieces of this recruiting puzzle will fall into place. I’m already excited about the Chuck Martin offense. You?

by whiskey OFD on Jan 9, 2012 12:35 AM EST reply actions

Do not criticize or try to contact him even though he decommitted.

Louis Nix just posted this on his facebook.

“Louis Nasty-Dawg Nix III
I cant go to sleep so i decided to look through my inbox and i found tons of hate messages from my recruiting. lol here is one of them. i find it so funny!!!

Have fun losing and bein all cold n shit at notre dame kiddo…your blind if you think it dont get alot better then ND without a coach a QB and his best offensive weapon. You guys are gonna suck and i hope you enjoy your 6-6 7-6 5-6 seasons maybe you can make it to the league but you would have had a better shot at the U. your just a moron in my opinion at least decommit to a winner like UF or Alabama not s. I hope your crying when you see J12 and the boys in the BCS then next few years when your not even bowling. Seems to me you didnt have the balls to come and compete in the Gables and im glad your gone so we can bring in a real competitor and a kid with heart a true cane. which you are not. no swag at all. have fun losing in the cold indiana weather ahahahahh indiana what a f**kin dumba** you are i cant get over it."

Learn a lesson from Big Lou. Don’t contact a recruit after they decommitt!

what's sad about that email is that the idiotic and grammatically incorrect Florida fan is that his predictions aren't that far off........

here we are two 8-5 seasons later, a lot of cold weather, no QB and two SEC teams in the NC game.

But some kids like get to get learned and take the road less traveled…that’s why I like Nix.

by Mouth of the South on Jan 9, 2012 10:34 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

We'll be fine.

I have confidence in this staff to find another corner or two. There’s a reason they stay after so many kids , even when there seems to be only a couple of spots left. They know things change, right up til the end.

by tlndma on Jan 9, 2012 6:09 AM EST reply actions

Maybe this makes Yuri Wrights decison easier and he follows Shumate to ND.

I really liked Darby, great speed etc. but Rivals has Wright ranked ahead of Darby so I guess if you lose a Darby and get a Wright its not a big loss.

It's never fun taking a recruit off our sidebar on the main page

Some thoughts, starting with the negative:

A) This class was built on the Sheppard/Darby duo, and losing the latter (for now) obviously hurts. Sure, we may still get Wright or another corner, but I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that Darby was a gem of this class.

B) Speed y’all. Even if we are able to convince ourselves that other players are better, or other players are more highly rated, losing Darby’s insane speed is a big blow to this class. It was his speed that made him such a special part of this class and future at Notre Dame.

C) Having Darby in our corner for so long and then leaving just three weeks before NSD makes it hurt more.

Some positives:

1) He may come back to Notre Dame—-keep those fingers crossed.

2) Wright would be a good addition in Darby’s place, nay, Wright would be a great addition in Darby’s place.

3) Darby has allegedly been wavering for quite some time now. 3 weeks out is short notice, but it’s better than leaving the day off NSD, without the coaches having much of a backup plan.

Difference in this coaching staff vs. previous

Is that they don’t have a set number at a position and then stop recruiting once that number has been filled. They understand that 17 and 18 year olds change their mind.

This might lead to other staffs pointing out to a commit that they are still recruiting other players at a position even though that player has committed. Also, this might not sit well with particular players.

Either way, it is the nature of recruiting, and I think the rules put these kids in a tough spot.

I don't tweet often--but when I do, you can be sure it isn't important.
@jemiesle

by Jim Miesle on Jan 9, 2012 8:39 AM EST up reply actions

Here is what he know:

1. There are just over three weeks until NSD
2. There is an NCAA dead period until the end of the week, so don’t expect any new news on this any time soon. A dead period means just that—zero contact, including setting up OVs.
3. Brian Kelly has not taken his in-home visit with Darby just yet.
4. Running track is very important to this young man, and that should be respected. Chris Brown (WR commit) is planning on running track as well (triple jump), so that could always help.
5. It is unclear whether or not ND remains in the picture, but this staff has faced the same issue last year and handled it very well. Trust that the coaching staff knows what they are doing.
6. He commited early on, but maintained he wanted to take other visits. He might just be getting nervous about making the right decision. Unless you personally were a top flight football recruit, I don’t think you can understand what these young men are going through. It has to be a tough decision.
7. If Darby does end up going elsewhere, he is making the decision on what he feels is best for him. I don’t have a problem with that. I realize all ND fans would love for him to play in South Bend for the next 4 years, but that may not happen. I personally hope he does what is right for him, and I think most (if not all) fans would agree with that.

One other thing of note I forgot earlier...

is that Darby is now planning on announcing on NSD.

Either way, it appears that KLM, Cave and Slaughter are the only 5th years for 2012, the rest of the remaining scholarships will be filled in this class.

If I've learned anything from this year

it’s that we should send more coaches to track meets. Darby, RG3 (okay so maybe not a ton of guys) are great track athletes and football players. How about we send a scout to all the big events and have them go around and ask everyone to hold a football?
/not sure if I’m serious

by my name is inigo montoya on Jan 9, 2012 8:51 AM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Rocket was a track athlete

As was Randy Kinder
Dean Lytle
and some others I have trouble remembering from back in the day. Track and football do co-exist, but if he wants a top program, ND does not fit that bill.

Good Luck to RD, still hoping it is the Luck o’the Irish.

Clearing out non-productive players does not mean he can fill beyond the 15-schollie/year limit.

It seems that losing Carlisle, Prater, and any rumored others would hurt more when injuries pile up.

by Cranked_Irish on Jan 10, 2012 9:57 AM EST up reply actions

USC has to get below 75

beginning in 2012 and for two more years. Transfers so far include Brice Butler, Kyle Prater, Amir, and TJ Bryant. Armstead is still listed but will be gone. Expect a couple more. They are down to 7 WR, counting a verbal from the 2012 class. USC has 10 commits for 2012 towards a limit of 15.

Prater will choose between Illinois, NW and Wisconsin. Remember Justin McCay, four star WR who went to OU? He is transferring to KU. Grunhard was his h.s. coach.

by Michael Collins on Jan 10, 2012 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

Isn't Darby the kind of guy who could come in and start his first year in South Bend?

"I have thought a lot about why people get so hostile online, and I have come to believe it is primarily because we live in a society with a hypertrophied sense of justice and an atrophied sense of humility and charity, to put the matter in terms of the classic virtues." --Alan Jacobs

by JDT217 on Jan 10, 2012 10:51 AM EST reply actions

I think that would have been unlikely...

seems like an unfinished product to me. Already there athletically but not yet from a technical standpoint. I would not be surprised if Tee Shepard or Brian Poole started right away, but Darby and Yuri Wright would seem like a stretch to me. Beating out guys like Jackson, Brown, and Atkinson won’t be easy for any true freshman.

by alstein on Jan 10, 2012 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

Unlikely that he would outplay the existing guys for a starting spot

but he could probably outrun them, which is why the decommitt hurts. He would have gotten looks as a kickoff returner (and maybe a gunner, although I’m not sure how good he is at getting off blocks) as soon as he stepped on campus. I also held some hope that he would see limited action on offense as the player most likely to take the top off the defense or take a bubble screen to the house.

Even the Pope hates the Trojans

by Publius2010 on Jan 10, 2012 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

He would as a returner and on special teams

He’s very good in press coverage but I think it would be a year or two before he could play as a corner – understanding zones, off coverage, playing against elite college receivers. Shepard will probably start right away along with Jackson. Brown and Lo Wood will rotate behind them.
