One Foot Down 2012 Recruiting Central
Welcome to One Foot Down's new Recruiting Central page.
Click on the widget logo on the left sidebar of the main page to bring this page up in the future.
This is where you'll be able to reference scholarship numbers, roster spots, recruit information, player breakdowns, and much more. We are still playing around with content and format a bit, so if you have a suggestion, please feel free to share.
I would like to take a moment to discuss contact with potential recruits. Unless you are personally related to them or have known them for the majority of their life, don't contact them via social media. Ever. Don't do it. No excuses. It won't help, could likely hurt the program's chances and is a potential NCAA violation.
Also, many fans get all excited or disappointed based on the recruiting service rankings of incoming players. These ranknigs are an inexact science at best. Some highly regarded athletes never play a snap in college. Other players that were passed over by top-tier programs become All-Americans. Rankings are generally weighed on a player's height/weight/40 time, location/level of competition and off-season camp circuits more than in-season performance. Trust in the staff's ability to spot talent that fits their system and their ability to develop said talent more than what one site says over another.
For reference, the NCAA rules can be found here.
SBNation recruiting updates for the Fighting Irish can be found here.
Also, SBNation's Spencer Hall wrote a recruiting primer which can be found here.

"Davonte is just too talented to not see the field as a freshman. I think he starts the year as one of the kick returners and should compete as a punt returner as well. There have been reports that the staff wants to use as many as seven WRs in a regular rotation, so expect him to see some time as the slot receiver this season."

Roster Breakdown
Three things:
1. You left off Kiel
2. You spelled Carlisle wrong
3. Any way you could distinguish between early enrollees and those that are only “committed”?
Thanks for doing this!

Thanks for the heads up.
I’ll be updating the roster breakdown tonight. We were holding off to see if anything else came up over the weekend.

It was a team effort, and we will look to continually improve. Any and all feedback is appreciated!

Nicky Baratti
I’ll admit I haven’t followed our recruiting much, so I might just be mastering the obvious, but this kid jumped out at me from the chart. If those numbers are bona fide, dude seems to have the physical tools to be an excellent safety.
by The Guys Get Shirts! on Jan 23, 2012 10:37 AM EST reply actions
The stats are always inflated.
Every now and then you’ll get a Jonas Gray, who was listed at 5’9" 209 lbs. by the recruiting services, who shows up at a stout 230 and can run a 4.5 40, but that’s pretty much the exception. I would guess that Baratti is closer to 6’0" or 6’1", and he probably runs more like a 4.7. The 40 times are the most exaggerated stats coming out of high school. Maybe Baratti hits the weights hard and shows up more stout than 215, but that’s usually the only stat that gets better once they get to campus.
Still, even if Baratti is 6’1", 210-220 lbs., and runs even a 4.7 40-yard dash, I think you’re right—he’s got the physical tools to be a very good safety.
by Mouth of the South on Jan 23, 2012 10:44 AM EST up reply actions
I still think he moves to LB...
but that might just be me. Sign me up for a 6’1"/240 lb weak-side ’backer who can move—especially one that was a former QB.

@jemiesle
I can't remember exactly where I saw this but
when surfing around yesterday Baratti told one if the pay sites that the staff is planning to use him as a S/LB hybrid like they used Slaughter vs FSU. That makes sense to me.

It does make sense to have someone on your roster that can do this well.
There are just too many teams that go 3- and 4-wide every down. Then there are the teams like Okie Light and Oregon that use multiple backs to confuse, freeze, and misdirect the D. You need a small-ish LB that can run.

Baratti after his in-home visit tonight...
“Definitely some special teams if not all special teams,” Baratti said. “And then they’ll try to get in, I guess you could say, the dime package. Being the hybrid linebacker/safety that can play zone or anything. You can play close to the line. It was cool to hear that.”
Inflation
I always assume the numbers are inflated, particularly height and weight. When I’ve dared suggest in other forums that 40-yd dash times are inflated, I’ve been met with “LOL FU THIS KID WAS FAT TIMED AT A CAMP SO THAT PROVES HE REALLY IS FASTER THAN USAIN BOLT AND HE ALSO BEAT A QUARTER HORSE IN A MATCH RACE.”
by The Guys Get Shirts! on Jan 23, 2012 9:16 PM EST up reply actions
All the numbers are generally inflated...
I think most places get height/weight from the high school programs (which are naturally inflated), and the 40 times aren’t precisely timed. I actually think the 40 time is an over-rated stat anyway, since how often do players sprint 40 yds in a straight line during the course of a game?
I don't tweet often--but when I do, you can be sure it isn't important.
@jemiesle
I think height is the most inflated "stat"
We should keep track of this, both when they get to Notre Dame and are officially listed and maybe even when they get to the combine and get measured to the freakin’ millimeter.

by Eric Murtaugh on Jan 23, 2012 10:10 PM EST up reply actions
Armando Allen is an interesting case to look at when talking of height inflation.
High school roster: 5’10"
Scout.com combine: 5’9"
Rivals (“verified”): 5’9"
Notre Dame roster: 5’10"
NFL combine: 5’8"
Chicago Bears roster: 5’10"
Notice that all the rosters put him at 5’10". The pre-college combine put him under that by an inch. The NFL combine put him under that by 2 inches. Nobody’s listed below 5’10" on ND’s current roster except for 5 walk-ons (all at 5’9" but for 1 at 5’8"). Is it pretty normal to basically not list anybody who plays below 5’10" on a roster?

It is likely irrelevant to this discussion since physical stats are, in fact, misrepresented on a regular basis
But the time of day that you measure your height is critical. You can be an inch or more taller in the morning than after you’ve been standing around all day.
That is interesting.
Is there really that much of a variation? That’s pretty crazy.

by fishoutofwater on Jan 24, 2012 9:18 PM EST up reply actions
i think that it is usually stated as about 3/4"
but since some of these athletes are quite tall i surmise that the difference for them could easily be over an inch. It’s pretty old research. Google “am i taller in the morning” and get more hits than you want to read.
You've been on other forums?!
GASP. That’s your first problem.

Nice job on this. I think Jarron Jones will be moved
from DT to OL if the Irish dont get another OL to committ. Garnett has eliminated the Irish and is down to Stanford and Michigan.
I'm not so sure...
I’ve seen a lot of people say this, but he will have all year to get his chance at DL (which he says he prefers). With Martin locking down LT and Lombard/Nichols/Prestwood competing for RT, he isn’t switching over anytime soon. Depth at DL > depth at OL, so if he can perform well this year, I don’t see him moving at any point. Definitely seems like a consensus that he is a better OT prospect than DL prospect, but I’m still betting on him sticking at DL.
I agree
We have a ton of young talent on the O-line. I think Kelly keeps Day and Jones on the D-line and recruits 3-4 O-linemen for next year (maybe even 5)
I was listening to Coach D on ISD PH and he thought for 2013,
what you said also, Irish are definitly going to need 4 OL 2013…..got one real good one now in Elmer.
Many have said this...
in the wake of his performance at the USAAAB. I believe he was fighting an ankle injury, so its hard to put too much stock in his performance there (it was his lateral movement that many have pointed to).
Tony Springmann would be another potential move to OT from the DL if there is a numbers crunch. Jones may be a better fit long term inside at NG (where Day projects), or certainly at least at the strong-side DE where containment isn’t as big of a responsibility. Just a few random thoughts…

Question...
Why isn’t Notre Dame able to pull any top tier big men (D and O Line) with their recruiting?
by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Jan 23, 2012 1:34 PM EST reply actions
It is.
Why shouldn’t this be?
by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Jan 23, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions
Because of
Sheldon Day, Jarron Jones, Ronnie Stanley, Aaron Lynch, Stephon Tuitt, Louis Nix, Troy Niklas, Matt Hegarty, Jordan Prestwood, Kona Schwenke, Christian Lombard, Ben Councell – and those are only 4+ stars from past 3 years (RIP Matt James) plus next year’s 5* Steve Elmer.
not keeping up with current events I see

Yuri Wright...

The in-home Kelly and Alford have with Brian Poole tomorrow is pretty important now.
Not surprising he's not ND though
reports were around that ND backed off (don’t know if it was the tweets or the expulsion or both).
Tomorrow...
Kelly, Alford, Cooks, and Diaco will all be there. They are visiting Poole as well.
WHEN???
When will the Diaco strike?
Well hello there hangover. Fancy meeting you here this bright Thursday morning.

Its funny because
When he took his visit to UC, he posted on his fbook things like “Man this place is boring, cant wait to get home”…..wow….(and no, im not fbook friends with him. Im following the OFD rules)
Mike Golic Jr. just tweeted (I hate saying that) that he will be back to play next year.
That means both he and Goodman are apparently “off the bubble” and grouped with locks Cave, Lewis-Moore, and Slaughter (Cwynar is out of contention, leaving Clelland, H. Williams, and D. McCarthy on the OFD bubble, with Newman, A. MacDonald, Posluszny, and D. Walker unlikely to return).

Probably means we're not picking up many more recruits this year
Kind of depressing in a way, but it will allow the 2013 class to be larger.

They may bring in a couple of RKG's that we've heard little about yet.
Or they may pull a last year and bring in some all-everything studs that we didn’t think we’d get.

I'd bet 100 dollars...
that ND will get more than just Standifer and back-up plans.
al with the inside info
I don’t want to take your bet, but who are you hearing? Just curious…
I don't tweet often--but when I do, you can be sure it isn't important.
@jemiesle
I've just heard that the staff is very confident...
that it’s close to pulling “a surprise or two”. Their track record is strong in this regard too. We aren’t gonna know everything and everyone they are working on. It’s the nature of the business.
I’ve also heard that Poole is much closer to flipping than his comments after the UA game would indicate. Not that I trust what everyone says, but I’ve seen it multiple places that he just needs that last little push to switch his commitment. I’ll also say that when ND commits re-affirm that they are 100% Irish, ND fans don’t seem to believe them, but when commits to other schools say it, ND fans throw up their hands and say “forget it, he’s not switching”. I really think they flip him today and he signs with ND next week.
Mike Frank has a good point
Pay attention to what a recruit does, not what he says.
If Poole was 100% committed, ND wouldn’t even get in his house. His parents are pro-ND also. In the end I think he stays with Florida but there’s a chance.
Darby taking visits, Tee and Deontay taking visits, Decker visiting OSU… those speak more than words.
It sounds like the staff is going to pull back and offer 5th years more than their plan Cs… go hard after Standifer then all the 5 stars left on the board. If we don’t land them, you have more 5th years back and more scholarships available for next year (which is actually a good thing because won’t we have only ~15 schollies if we signed remaining recruits with the 3 5th year locks?)
Not to happy
about having Goody AND Golic Jr. back….doesent speak to highly of the recruiting efforts/ NSD
This class is solid from top to bottom
You can’t blame the staff for not getting every 5 star player they targeted. I don’t think you need to question the job the staff has done recruiting. Goody and Golic give us experienced backups for next season and free up scholarships for the next recruiting class.

Davik Perkins
Wished we hadn’t parted with David Perkins. IK it was mutual, and I have no clue about his personal life, and really dont know much about him, but I wish it wouldn’t have happened. Now im not saying Im willing to compromise for whatever he did. My point is more I wish we had an athlete like him still on board…Seemed like hed be a solid player at ND.
Looking
At Poole’s comments after the UF coaches visited, ND is out. He’s solid to UF, Dad couldn’t sway him…. Ekanem visit is off(ND’s chosing)…. The focus gets narrower. Neal, Armstead, Agholor and Standifer.
looks like those are four guys
that the staff’s locked in on as well.

Keep your fingers crossed that there's a surprise...
the Turning Point seems to think so which gives me some hope – they alluded to something big 24 hours before Gunner showed up on campus and alluded to something coming on Feb 1. Hope it’s true…
Many pointed to Rios...
but there are still some rumors. I guess we find out in a few days…
I don't tweet often--but when I do, you can be sure it isn't important.
@jemiesle
Their message came a day after Rios canceled his visit
It was the third message I guess – the second appeared to be Rios. I hope there’s a pleasant surprise. But until something happens, I’m going to assume our class is done…
Post NSD #s
17 Signees (Includes Badger)
25 Freshmen (Includes Carlisle)
19 Sophs
15 Juniors
12 Seniors eligible for a 5th
88 Total
So we have room for 9 5th year players in 2012
Cave, KLM, Slaughter, Goodman appear to be in
That leaves 5 of the following 8
Walker (Already gave his number to Kiel)
Golic Jr. (Think he Tweeted he’s coming back)
Clelland
H Williams
Newman
Posluszny
McDonald
McCarthy

I would probably leave a spot open at this point...
depending on how LB Joe Schmidt plays in the spring and fall practice, I could see him earning a scholarship. Also, I like the idea of BK keeping one to hand out to a walk-on after camp closes out—those guys are program builders.

@jemiesle
Starting #s for the next cycle
17 Freshmen
25 Sophs
19 Juniors
9 Seniors eligible for a 5th
70 Total
15 Total spots available for new recruits if keep all 9 5th year options
9 Additional spots as a 1 for 1 for 5th year players
24 Absolute max number of schollies available
That obviously doesn’t account for any other attrition
Most likely end up with a class of approx 20 a year from now
whiskey
www.onefootdown.com
Roster Breakdown above (21 Feb) is updated to include Neal.
That makes 18 including Badger in this cycle which means one less fifth year option in 12’ and 13’.
