NFL Conference Championship Weekend
Any thoughts on who goes to the Super Bowl after Sunday's games?
I have been (and will continue to be) an NFL conspiracy theorist, so I think that the match-up will be determined by the best story lines.
Potential Match-ups:
Baltimore vs. NYG
Baltimore vs. San Francisco
New England vs. NYG
New England vs. San Francisco
Of the four, only two have intriguing story lines-- a NE-NYG rematch from four years ago and Baltimore-SF.
Clearly, the more intriguing is the Ravens-49ers game. There are three distinct story lines here:
1. Harbaugh Bowl, Part II. Two brothers take their teams head-to-head for the title. Also, did everyone know that Tom Crean (Indiana's head basketball coach) is their brother-in-law?
2. Captain Comeback returns to Indy. Jim Harbaugh nearly lead the Colts to the Super Bowl in the mid-90s and now returns to Indy for the Super Bowl with the 49ers.
3. Baltimore plays for the Super Bowl in Indy, the town to which their beloved Colts were moved in the 80's by the Irsay family. Nothing like ten tons of irony for the Baltimore football fans.
Not sure how the games will actually play out, but I am predicting a San Francisco-Baltimore Super Bowl.
Thoughts?

You are probably right...
but who outside of the NY-Boston corridor really wants to watch that?
Secretly, I think that is what the city of Indianapolis wants, because that would bring the most people to town.

So true on the interest level.
I’m honestly not that interested myself. I watch all of the playoff games but I’m generally just hoping to see some good football.
I do enjoy watching Brady play QB though. Man he is good.

Not to be a prick, but I'm really glad that the Harbaughs lost.
And I say this having no animus towards John.

I have no interest, at all, in a NE corridor Super Bowl
I hate Coughlin with a passion and I am always rooting for his hot seat to turned in to the auto da fe. Repentance for 1993 followed by the slow bbq of his black soul.
The only action keeping him from joining Judas in the 9th circle was beating Belichek 4 years ago. As it stands, his reservations are in bolgia 7.
…I am a Dolphins fan, so I can’t root for the Pats either.
Well hello there hangover. Fancy meeting you here this bright Thursday morning.

Well, there is being wrong...
and there is being wrong. A special thanks to special teams across the board and Lee Evans for not holding on to the ball…

I've listened to sports on the radio, seen it on TV, been to games in person....
events only that you could read about, been a ND fan longer than I would say everyone here at OFD has been alive. How about having one set of grandparents from NYC and the other from Boston…..got to go to the Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, Fenway, Braves Stadium.
How about seeing the 1951 shot heard around the world (Thompsons HR)…I was at the game with my grandfather, was only 10 and it ment nothing to me, just that Brooklyn lost, didnt mean anything to me till I was in my 20’s when they started talking about great games. Saw Johhny Podres beat the Yankees 2-0 for Brooklyns first WS. Saw on TV Ameche dive for the game winng TD that beat the Football Giants which is considered greatest NFL game ever, I watched games of NY’s 3 NBA teams…the Knicks, Rochester Royals, and Syracuse Nationals. So yeah Red I’m old but I’ve seen shit in sports and some of the greatest players that ever played and I dont regret one year of it….dont even get me going about music…Ive seen all the best and greatest groups.
You fill me with a lot of envy
That’s quite the sports history right there.
And the music…oh, the music.

Indeed it is.
And Bill definitely disproves the stereotypes about older fans being curmudgeonly malcontents. We’re glad to have you here, Bill!

That is an impressive list
but I find it amusing people people who still call them the NY football Giants. I get why Berman does it as he is a clown, but there have not been any NY baseball Giants in most fan’s lifetime. And for the record, yes, I was around albeit pretty young, when the Dodgers and Giants moved out west.

I guess, like you said before, its basically us older people that are just used to calling them the Football Giants.
Its just a habit I and people my age grew up with. I dont even give it a second thought when I refer to them as the Football Giants…just old habits are hard to drop I guess.
And it's fun. It's old school. It's something different. I like it.
That would be the only thing Berman-related that I like.

Bill, thanks very much for sharing.
Awesome. We are lucky to have you hanging around here as part of our conversation.
If you ever have time you should throw up some Fan Posts about some of that stuff. I would love to hear more detailed accounts of some of those experiences.

OFD is the best place on the internet to discuss ND Football and so glad I found it.
I used to be at Bleacher Report and read articles by Eric Murtaugh and was very impressed. He was the only one there at the ND site that said anything of substance, most everyone else wrote nonsense, then there was the name calling, fighting just a bunch of arguing…not discussing. Then there were no more articles from Eric and eventually after a couple months someone at BR mentioned that Eric had a great article at OFD about something that I dont remember what, so I asked “whats OFD” and was told….been here ever since and refuse to even go and read at BR anynore.
Yes, things went downhill real quickly at B/R
It’s the owners fault there. I like to black out the time spent there.
That place is a garbage pit now.

Right on, Bill
B/R wasn’t that bad about 3 years ago when Eric, MC and others (including myself from time-to-time) were writing. The discussion was normally pretty good. After someone wrote an article about how I was wrong on Tommy Rees, I pretty much quit it and haven’t been back.

Yourself, MC, Eric, Burger, Mouth, Whiskey and anyone I forgot
write fantastic articles as do the fans that contribute to the Fan Posts. Its enjoyable reading, full of facts, sometimes serious, sometimes amusing and its not just ND Football, its other subjects as well. People here can express an opinion with out being called names or disrepected. Alstein and myself had some heated exchanges about DL being tired or whayever…we didnt call each other A-Holes or names….we sent a few barbs back and forth but it was a discussion that we agreed to diasgree. Mouth and I also had some jabs going back and forth also…all in good fun. Burger showed me what “winning the internet means”…which was cool. None of this could have happened at B/R without a ton of fighting and name calling.
I threw some jabs, sure, but Bill ended it with devastating left hook.

Not with that icon you have...The Greatest... and I do mean th greatest ever.
You floated like butterfly and stung like bee with those jabs.
Speaking of The Greatest how cool was the intro to the NFC
championship game with Ali talking about “bad” and “mean”
Great.
But believe it or not I’m more of a Frazier type of guy. It’s just that there are no Frazier pics worthy of an avatar.

Smokin Joe one of the top 3 or 4 all time.
I rank em…1 Ali, 2 Marciano, 3 Smokin Joe, 4 Lewis and I think both Ali and Frazier would have easily handled both Lewis and Marciano
Check this out, Bill.
Listverse is a great website all around, but I really enjoyed this list of top 10 heavyweights of all time.
I know that these guys may not have been considered because they were really in a different epoch, but how do Jack Johnson and John L. Sullivan not make the list?
Ali and Frazier both easily handle Marciano? He was the hardest hitter of all time and simply never got tired. Ever. And I think that the more modern training techniques and nutrition that Ali and Frazier had the advantage of would have helped Marciano. Also, Frazier couldn’t handle Foreman’s power, so what makes you think he could withstand Marciano’s punches?
by Mouth of the South on Jan 27, 2012 4:19 PM EST up reply actions
Not sure but I think Marciano was like 5'10 or 5'11, and fought at a weight of like 185 to 195.
Ali being 6’4, 220, lightning fast hands and awesome footwork would be jabbing and sticking and moving wearing down Marciano. Louis was about 6’ or maybe 6’1 fought at under 200 pounds mostly, was a plodder…just moved forward with no footwork…Ali would do the same to him.
As for Smokin Joe against either of them….he was about the same height had them by like 25 popunds and was always relentless the way he moved forward…bobbing and weaving, hiding behind those gloves and when he got you against the ropes he was terrific body puncher….with Marciano and Louis slight of frame that is going to wear you down.
As far as Foreman handeling Frazier…not one clue how that happened, and then Ali beating Foreman….again no clue how that shouldnhave happened especially at Ali’s age.
Like any sport boxing has its forerunners of greatness and I guess they just get lost over time by the average fan. Untill you brought them up I had forgotten about them completely.
Bill thanks for the kind words.
OFD actually turns 3 here in a few days which is kind of hard to believe. It has been a very interesting and educational journey thus far. I will talk about some of that in a post early next week.
The extremely short version is that the only real goal that ever existed was to have a rational and productive conversation. Thankfully we have been able to slowly build a team of writers and regular commenters that are all on the same page in that respect.
Now we just have to make sure and keep it that way!
