Brian Kelly Completes His Coaching Staff

After the bowl game, Brian Kelly appointed Chuck Martin, Secondary Coach, as Offensive Coordinator, replacing Charlie Molner, who took over the Head Coach position at UMass. Among many moves, Bob Diaco added the title of assistant head coach to his Defensive Coordinator position. Kerry Cooks added the title of Co-Defensive Coordinator.

Five days later, Tim Hinton, RB coach, and Ed Warinner, OL coach, left for Ohio State despite contract extensions.

With Ohio State, Warinner got the titles of Co-Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. He recruited the Midwest for Kelly. Hinton, an Ohio native and who got a masters degree from Ohio State, began coaching as a graduate assistant under Earl Bruce. Hinton coached high school football in Ohio, at Ohio University and at Cincinnati prior to coming to Notre Dame. Hinton had recruiting duties that covered Ohio for Kelly. Hinton will be their RB coach.

Brian Kelly now seems to have completed his coaching staff after Warinner's and Hinton's departures. Although Notre Dame has yet to make the official announcement, the new Offensive Line coach will be Harry Hiestand, formerly Tennessee's Offensive Line coach. Hiestand coached in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, and prior to that at Illinois in similar positions.

The new Safeties coach, replacing Martin, will be Bobby Elliott, who's extensive coaching career includes experience on Hayden Fry's staff at the University of Iowa in various positions, rising to become their Defensive Coordinator. He has also had two coaching stents at Iowa State University. Of note is that Elliott coached both Bob Diaco and Kerry Cooks when they played at Iowa.

I have linked their respective biographies under their names.

The only questions left to answer are who will coach the running backs and who will recruit Ohio.

What do you think?

This SBT Article on Elliot is great.

I think he’s a slam dunk hire.

Hiestand is a tougher nut to crack though he does have a nice resume. That said OL coaches are always a tough nut to crack from the outside looking in.

I’m really curious to see this offense come together.

BTW thanks for putting that together MC.

This is definitely something we should be kicking around here. I am curious to see what the commentariat thinks about these guys.

Alford will coach RBs with Scott Booker coaching WRs...

as far as the hires go, they are home runs. Elliott will transition incredibly smoothly and work very well (obviously) with the defensive staff in place and he has just tremendous experience. Hiestand has helped a lot of guys get into the NFL, has coached in the NFL, maintains great relationships with his former linemen from what I have read, and has a level of enthusiasm that Warriner simply didn’t and better fits the style of coaching that Kelly wants at that position group.

This staff is excellent. Kelly took his lumps for not putting new coaches in place quickly, especially in the context of losing Taylor Decker, but this is why. It’s incredibly more important to put the right coaches in place than any recruit, and I would say Kelly handled what could’ve been a difficult situation expertly. Almost as though he has been doing this awhile. I’m fired up about this.

I agree

and drawing on some of their geographical experience in a great city, Brian Kelly knows how you face slimeball wannabees:

“They hit you once. You hit them twice. It’s the Chicago way.”

Meyer learned from Meyer

Urban Meyer figures if, “If you don’t have the talent……Just steal it.”

Meyer Lansky was the old Chicago way.

While these guys aren't the big names some were looking for...

I think they are solid hires across the board. Great article from the SBT.

Will Elliott coach special teams as well (it was talked about in the article)?

Alford back to RBs and Booker at WR coach works as well. It will be interesting to see if any of these guys can make an impression on potential recruits down the stretch or for the 2013 class.

I don't tweet often--but when I do, you can be sure it isn't important.

Re: Special Teams coaching...

I read that Booker is coaching kick/punt returners, or at least he told Prosise something along those lines during his visit last week. Just an interesting nugget I thought regarding special teams. As far as who the actual coordinator will be, is there any reason to believe that it won’t be Mike Elston again?

Tremendous hires

Elliott more so than Hiestand.

Plus, look at Bobby:

Sky rockets in flight.

I love it

And not just because of his pedigree and his resumé. It seems terribly important that there be good chemistry in a coaching staff, and I think that’s clearly what we’ll see here, with his history with so many of the current coaches. Mike Frank also pointed out that he could really help with recruiting in the plains region, where we seem to have a big black hole in current recruiting efforts. Also – he’s got a leer that looks eerily like Jack Nicholson. And that’s ok by me.

Can’t you just imagine Elliot telling a potential recruit, “Because you…are my number one…guy!”
