With the nightmare that was the USF game behind us we are looking forward to a much better weekend of college football here at One Foot Down. There are a few pretty good matchups on the slate that will serve as passable primers for Notre Dame taking on Michigan under the lights at the Big House.
Most major programs will continue plodding along through their September slate of buy games but the games listed below could be worth taking a look at. In some cases they are good matchups, and in other cases there are opportunities to scout future Notre Dame opponents.
As a reminder we will again be hosting an open thread here at One Foot Down on Saturday. We had a great time discussing the games with you last weekend and we are looking forward to another round. So grab your laptop, tablet or smartphone and stop by to join the conversation. We will likely open it earlier in the day to accommodate some conversation on the earlier games as we are getting primed for the Irish.
If any of you are looking for full TV schedules I suggest the link below. You can find permanent links to this one and a couple of others on the bottom left hand side of our front page under "TV Schedules."
Now on to the games.
*All times listed below are EST.
Thursday 8 September
Arizona at Oklahoma State 8:00 ESPN
Okie Light warmed up last week by hanging 60 on the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. The Wildcats should prove to be a slightly tougher test. Not a bad Thursday night matchup.
Friday 9 September
FIU at Louisville 7:00 ESPN
Need something to do early Friday evening? Check out Charlie Strong and the Cardinals try to hang with an athletic FIU squad. I also like to think of games like this as scouting for my December bowl game picks.
Missouri at Arizona State 10:30 ESPN
Back to back nights of the Big 12-2 taking on one of the Arizona Schools. Mizzu wasn't exactly on fire in a 17-9 win over Miami OH last weekend so this could be interesting. That will be especially true if Arizona State is lives up to their preseason hype. Out here in Pac-12 country expectations are high for Dennis Erickson's team. I also want to see Sun Devil linebacker Vontaze Burfict in action after seeing all of those Tweets about how he has turned into a complete animal.
Saturday 10 September
Oregon State at Wisconsin 12:00 ESPN
This game sounded a lot more interesting before Oregon State dropped their opener to Sacramento State in OT. This could get ugly in a hurry.
FAU at Michigan State 12:00 ESPN2
Can't pass up an opportunity to take a look at Sparty before they head to South Bend in week 3.
Iowa at Iowa State 12:00 FSN
Iowa State beat Northern Iowa 20-19 last week. Is Iowa good enough to capitalize with a beat down? I suppose with the Cy-Hawk Trophy on the line you never know. The Clones might come out and shock the entire state of Iowa!
Mississippi State at Auburn 12:00 ESPN3
This is by far the most interesting game in the early time slot and it is relegated to ESPN3. That makes total sense.
Alabama at Penn State 3:30 ABC
The WWL is trying to hype this game up like it is a clash of the titans but we all know that Bama is going to roll into Happy Valley and run rule Penn State.
Virginia Tech at East Carolina 3:30 FSN
My little boy is way into pirates right now. When he isn't throwing footballs all over the place he snaps into pirate mode. The little guy is always running around the house rocking an eye patch, yelling "Shiver me timbers" and swinging a plastic sword. He's about as likely to slow down David Wilson and the Hokie offensive attack as the ECU defense is. Ruffin McNeil's boys gave up 56 to South Carolina last weekend and this weekend could be equally ugly.
TCU at Air Force 3:30 Versus
This is a really interesting football game. How will Gary Patterson's defense respond after getting shredded by RGIII last weekend? What does Air Force really look like? This is one of the games I am most looking forward to watching this weekend.
South Carolina at Georgia 4:30 ESPN
The talking heads on the WWL are already calling Mark Richt a dead man walking if he loses this game. Nothing like a media generated added level of intrigue. Maybe reverting back to their normal uniforms will help the Dawgs snap back in.
BYU at Texas 7:00 ESPN2
I really do want to watch this game. I never located the Longhorn Network last weekend so I wasn't able to get eyes on Texas as they cruised against Rice. BYU went on the road and squeaked by Ole Miss in their opener which isn't a bad start. This could be a good game. I will try to at least soak up the first quarter until....
Utah at USC 7:30 Versus
I flip over to this one to see what the Trojans look like against Utah. I wasn't real impressed with what I saw out of USC against Big Ten bottom feeder Minnesota last weekend. I need to DVR this one and review it on Sunday.
Notre Dame at Michigan 8:00 ESPN
Eric and Burger will bang out some previews for you with their usual level of awesome so I won't steal their thunder. The scene is well set for this one. A night game at the big house with a dash of throwback uniforms and the Gameday crew on the scene. Notre Dame has a great opportunity here to bounce back in a very positive way on the national stage. BK and the boys need to capitalize on that. If they can keep Shoelace in check and eliminate the mental errors that destroyed them last weekend it will happen.
What other games should I be trying to keep an eye on?
