Notre Dame Recruiting - Open Thread

I guess I'll get this one started, though Jim is OFD's expert. Feel free to throw in any information you have.

How many scholarships remain after Stanley's commitment and Te'o's decision to come back for his Senior year? Will anyone bolt? Who besides Crist could transfer opening another scholarship? Eifert - where will he grade out and how much of a chance is there he goes to the NFL?

Today, Noah Spence, DL, committed to Urban and Ohio State. Marcus Rios, DB, committed to UCLA.

QB - Gunner Kiel gets a scholarship if he wants one. Devin Fuller has expressed interest (see below).

RB - KeiVarae Russell is down to UW or the Irish. Update: Russell is Irish!! Amir Carlisle will transfer from USC!!

WR - Jordan Westercamp, verbally committed to Nebraska, just visited - at least his second visit. ND is the only alternative to the Huskers and Davonte Neal and Nelson Agholor are the top two ranked prospects at this point. Ralph Andrades is scheduled to visit January 13th.

TE - Taylor McNamara is the top rated TE. The situation may be similar to with Kiel. Enough scholarships?

OT - One spot left, IMO. Josh Garnett is our target. Garnett is a OG.

DL - Arik Armstead is deciding between ND, Ore, Cal, Auburn, Texas

LB - Ifeadi Odenigbo may be finished with visits, unless Urbie swings him. Ken Ekenam will take only two visits - Va Tech and then us. Schyler Miles visited last week and left very impressed, but a scholarship offer may have to come later with his only other OV so far to Florida.

DB - The Don Bosco pair, Yuri Wright and Elijah Shumate, just finished their vists to ND. One has three OVs left and the other 4 OVs. Ishmael Adams is (no longer) a possibility. Anthony Standifer will visit. Update: Elijah Shumate is Irish!! Update: Darby decommits, opening the door for....

Others (Irish not in consideration)

Tough to pick the rest

QB-That it’s down to us and Vandy/LSU seems reassuring. But something has never seemed right about Kiel’s way of doing things. That he’s being personally recruited by Kelly also seems to point toward him coming. But still, I have a really hard time balancing Golson as the future with Kiel right behind him.

RB-I think we need another, but I’m not sure Russell is coming. Will we snag some random kid late in the game?

WR-Westercamp and Neal are a good bet. Agholor would be a miracle but I don’t see it happening.

TE-Mac is going to OU, I think.

OL-I think we’re done here. In a year for Skill recruiting I don’t think we bring in 4 and I don’t think we’re that close with anyone left.

DL-Done

LB-Odenifhghfdofrjobo would be a great addition. We need one more here.

CB-Two more are likely. Who will they be?

Tea leaves

QB – not sure how you predicted this one. Kiel to Irish?
RB – Russell did come to the Irish
TE – Right on with Mac
OL – Don’t think we are done
DB – Shumate and Wright
LB – Three different possibilities. IO is our preference.
WR – Will Alford pull NA out of Fla? I can dream.

Last year was Power, this year is Skill

Load up on Skill.

I wouldn’t say no Garnett, but I don’t think OL needs to be a priority since we got Stanley last week.

I love our 3 receivers, but I would feel much better if we got one or two more. Ditto for DB.

I still think we’re good at RB. Take Russell if he wants to come, but don’t reach for anyone.

by burger23 on Dec 18, 2011 9:24 PM EST reply actions

Apparently McNamara has a non-commitable offer...

…only if Eifert leaves and/or some of the other chips don’t fall ND’s way can he come. I don’t see it happening, and the staff has stopped visiting him in the last couple weeks.

As far as DL goes, don’t sleep on Armstead. ND is certainly on the outside looking in, but I think counting this staff out on someone they are going really hard after is foolish.

Brian Poole still seems most likely at DB, although Shumate and Yuri had great visits and are firmly in the mix. Shumate’s dad is sold on ND, let’s hope Elijah is before too long as well.

by alstein on Dec 18, 2011 10:04 PM EST reply actions

Four more scholarships seem solid

We seem to be committed to another WR, a LB, and 2 DBs (a Safety and CB). How torn (or committed) is Brian Poole?

After that, whiskey can crunch the numbers for us.

This staff is impressive, starting recruiting 2013 with the USC game or before, forming relationships. Like last year, I think they are already filling pieces in from 2013 on whom what positions and players they want. McNamara may not be a huge miss if they get Adam Breneman. With an OT commitment of Steve Elmer, perhaps OL for this year is done.

by Michael Collins on Dec 18, 2011 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Our biggest need this year is in the Secondary and Wide Receiver

USC is coming hard after Greenberry and Shepherd, Tee Shepherd is the hey because his cousin will follow him wherever he goes. They both are Cali kids and I would not put it past U$C to do something illegal to get them. Auburn wants Darby and Coach Kelly has to make sure he closes strong because these 3 players are equal to us getting Lynch, Tuitt and Ishaq Williams last year.

Finally, if Kiel commits before January I think we would have a excellent shot at getting a premier WR and another stud OT. I think it will come down to us and Vanderbilt. Brian Kelly needs to close this recruiting class with a BANG!!

Also some current commits that may flip come signing day...

there are many rumors about Tee and Deontay’s trip this weekend, but they still appear to be Irish, although no news is bad news a lot of times in recruiting. Others are assuming that Darby flips at some point to one of the Tigers (Auburn or Clemson). Plenty of unknowns this time of year, and I think we can be guaranteed a few surprises in the next few weeks, some positive and some negative. Some, like Tuitt and Lynch last year, might be both depending on the day.

It’s a difficult balancing act to follow all this and not let it drive you crazy, but I’m pretty confident in the staff’s ability to respond to surprises and close. I’m expecting a very strong class when it all takes shape on signing day.

From what I've heard

Tee and Shep’s visit to USC went well for ND.

Sky rockets in flight.

by Eric Murtaugh on Dec 19, 2011 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

I've read conflicting "information" on that...

but the most likely explanation is that taking the visit was Tee’s ticket to Deontay’s championship game. Hope it’s true, but there is some strange optimism coming from some USC mods that they have some great news from this weekend that really screws one of their rivals, but they have to keep it silent for now. Seems like BS to me (USC people think they are getting everyone) but you just never know with these kids.

Darby seems to be of greater concern, but I trust the staff to finish strong.

by alstein on Dec 19, 2011 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

There seems to be a fair number of ND fans that are assuming

that those two are now headed to USC. With the EE’s being able to enroll next week the wait for a final answer there should be coming soon.

After that we probably won’t get much “new” news until the dead period ends on 4 Jan. The home stretch is always such a good time!

by whiskey OFD on Dec 19, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

One of the insider boards...

has premium info that is favorable for ND (I’d feel like I was stealing their info saying anything more than that). NBC Sports say they contacted ND coaches and the coaches think they are in good shape with them.

Many ND boards are at an extreme panic level right now over these two. ND fans think everyone is going anywhere but ND, USC fans think everyone is going to USC. I’m not sure I understand why in either case, but it is what it is.

Thanks, Al. We need a calming presence.

Why don’t you start up some transcendental mediation classes in the One Foot Down gym? Or maybe some yoga with whale sounds in the background, anything to calm these hosers down. We will be ok. Just remember last year.

by Mouth of the South on Dec 19, 2011 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

I would be surprised if Tee flipped out of all our commits

His dad and he loved the school. My personal feeling is he was able to get all his expenses paid in watching Greenberry at the championship by taking an official to USC. They also reassured the coaching staff and these are high character kids. Add to that that Tee was ND’s first commit back in March.

Darby would be more of a concern to me. I think it would be huge to get both but if we keep one of the elite DBs and add the Bosco pair, we will have the top secondary haul and I would still be happy with that.

After the bowl game (and the dead period), expect the coaching staff to work their magic. They’ve impressed me.

Eveything I've read says we're Ok with Shepard,

Greenbury and Darby for now. Shepard enrolls in 29 days, I just don’t see that changing.
Six spots left. Kiel soon……
I like our chances with Poole and Shumate, as their parents have been in ND’s corner…..
Pelini couldn’t keep Westerkamp from visiting ND, he’s ours…… Alfords on Agholor, that’s a good thing……Armani Reeves will flip from PSU and join his friend Will Mahone.

by lookingdeadred on Dec 20, 2011 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

That would be an interesting question

Or should I say decision from the coaching staff.

He’d be coming into a backfield with Wood, Riddick (highly likely), GA3, McDaniel, and possibly Roberson—-while fighting for PT with fellow frosh Mahone.

Seeing as how Russell would be the skinniest RB to come to South Bend in a long time (170-175 pounds right now), I have a hard time believing he’ll play right away.

Perhaps he’s just that good, but it’s not like he’s light years ahead of anyone already on the roster as a prospect.

He’s clear ahead of McDaniel obviously (who was criminally underrated out of high school) and a decent amount ahead of Riddick. He’s slightly ahead of Mahone, about the same as GA3, and not quite where Cierre Wood was.

Factor in his lack of size, and that there’s likely 4 guys with touches ahead of him right away—-I smell redshirt.

And I still think we need another RB in this class, but I don’t envision Russell playing right away. He might get a look in the slot though.

Sky rockets in flight.

by Eric Murtaugh on Dec 20, 2011 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

He should redshirt but

the depth, or lack of, behind CWood is alarming and he would not have to play that well to jump to #3 or even #2.

~Earl Warren

by lookingdeadred on Dec 20, 2011 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't call it alarming

Wood is a proven commodity and Riddick, while he needs time to learn the offense as a running back, is probably a better fit at RB. After that, we have GAIII. I know you’re not sold on him at RB, but by the sounds of things, the coaches intend on keeping him there. And then we also have Cam, who we really don’t know anything about.

I’d say our sitaution is more “unknown” than alarming. Wood is the only sure thing, but as long as any one of Riddick/Atkinson/McDaniel step up, we’ll be fine and can redshirt Mahone and Reeves if he comes here.

by burger23 on Dec 20, 2011 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

If Riddick is able to make the switch back to RB

it is less alarming, but if he fails, we have a big problem.

I read this quote by Russell in the Seattle Times:

“I’ve got to find a little outfit but it’s going to be cool, don’t even worry about it,” Russell said. “I’m figuring out a way. If this doesn’t come through, I’m going to have to do the original hat thing, but I’ll find a way to make it unique. It’s going to be a thrill, watch.”

And all I can think is that he’s going to come to his press conference wearing a Leprechaun outfit. I guess he could certainly wear a Huskie costume but I’m hoping for the former. How cool and unique would that be?

by Irishane on Dec 23, 2011 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

Recruiting is certainly more fun (well, nerve-wracking more than fun) than it used to be

Wasn’t it 88 total including all possible 5th years (now 89 with Stanley)? Drop 10 because I only see Cave, KLM, Slaughter, and Cwynar coming back – so 79 total.

2 possible medical scholarships in Jake Golic (who just had surgery today) and Roberson.

If Eifert goes that scholly will go to Mcnamara if he wants it.

So we have 6 scholarships available (with a possible 9). I think we get:
Kiel
Russell
Wright
Shumate
Westerkamp
Garnett

I don’t think Poole leaves Florida. I don’t think we get any more LBs so that will be critical for next year. Would love to be wrong on Agholor – think he also stays at Florida, possibly Oklahoma. I see Shaq and Armstead at Cal.

Was good to see lots of good news on Tee and Greenberry

I’ve been completely focused on Greenberry + at least 2 elite corners coming in this class. I think overall the class looks great but those are the primary targets in my opinion. Hope we close strong!

This is what I know

from multiple sites. Mahone tweets Monday, “I know something you don’t know” “ND could have top 5 class”…..Word comes out late Monday , Russell will announce next week…. My two cents...

Being out on vacation really pulls from my OFD time pool, but here are my thoughts:

QB – Kiel is a coin-flip at this point. LSU is coming on strong, including the kids at his high school chanting “LSU” when he was awarded the Indiana Mr. Football award. I really don’t know what to make of it other than he has said (1) he wants to stay close to home, (2) wants a good education, and (3) isn’t concerned about playing right away. All of those signs point to ND or Vandy, but you never know

RB – I actually don’t like the chances with Russell as much as others. I get nervous when a kid has his home state school as one of his two finalists. You never know though…

WR – Agholor and Neal are the two big fish here. Not sure about this Westerkamp kid, since it is all pretty new. I think ND gets at least one

TE – McNamara comes if Eifert leaves. He wants to play right away and isn’t likely to jump into the crowded TE rotation if Eifert is back.

OL – Garnett wants to be a doctor and stayed with the voodoo child on his OV. He is also looking at Stanford. The OL depth chart is pretty full, and he projects at OG. I don’t think that he comes to ND in the end, but that is just a gut feeling (I think he goes to Stanford)

DL – Armstead is still out there and says he doesn’t yet know. Many think he is a lock for Cal, I am not so sure. Your guess is as good as mine here

LB – Odenigbo and Ekanem are both in play here. Odenigbo has education as priority #1 and is looking at Stanford and Northwestern in addition to ND. I like the chances there. Ekanem just blew up his knee, which postponed his OV until Jan. I think if ND misses on Odenigbo, then Ekanem ends up in SB. Miles is probably only in play if Agholor commits, but he really enjoyed his OV to Florida.

DB – I have thought for a while that Shumate will probably end up Irish. I was surprised (pleasantly) that Wright had such a great time/impression of the university. It was his first OV though, so I wonder if he will be as impressed with other schools.

I don't tweet often--but when I do, you can be sure it isn't important.
@jemiesle

by Jim Miesle on Dec 21, 2011 9:58 AM EST reply actions

Thanks for the rosy outlook, Jim.

I share your thoughts on Russell, as do Mike Frank and Coach D. Being in the top two sounds nice, but there’s no consolation prize in recruiting.

And your thoughts on Russell go for Armstead too. The thing that bothers me about Armstead is that—correct me if I’m wrong, but—ND was the only school in consideration after he decommitted from USC. He still hasn’t committed to ND and has added Cal to the mix, which makes me think that he’s just not that jazzed about ND. But I guess if he was just going to take the easy road and go to Cal, he would have done it already?

By the way, how freaking lucky is Cal? They just get all of these great recruits by default. The recruits want to go to the in-state power, SC has been sanctioned and can’t take most of them, so they’re like, “Hmmm, UCLA sucks, so what else? Cal? I guess?” I feel like that’s what these kids who are picking Cal should be doing at their press conferences. “I’ve chosen to play for… Cal? Right? I guess?”

Sorry to hear that Garnett is likely to be Cardinal (you can’t say “A Cardinal”), but I’m glad to see that blue-chippers are thinking about life after football. This is a good thing.

Odenigbo—NOOOOO. Can’t let Stanford beat us for another blue chip linebacker this year. How good is this kid? 4.5, 4, or 3.5-ish?

by Mouth of the South on Dec 21, 2011 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed on Odenigbo

Noor Davis and Odenigbo? It would make me despise tCardinal.

by tlndma on Dec 21, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Two quick things

I doubt they take McNamara unless Eifert leaves / they end up with an unexpected spot available. Also I think the chances with Westerkamp are really good. I’m sure I don’t know anything anyone else does – but when a kid takes a visit after the school he’s committed to sends the house to try and keep him, I’d have to think that’s a really good sign.

Additionals

I’d bet
Cox goes to Michigan State, having made 1 OV and three Unofficials. His other OVs were to Ohio State and Wisconsin.

Ishmael Adams’ top 2 are Arizona State and Cal. ND is third.

I think Brian Poole stays with Florida. Just a hunch. If Alford pulls him away, that’s a huge coup.

Feedback/Updates

From Jordan Westercamp’s coach on his visit (from ISD): "He had a great visit," Montini Catholic head coach Chris Andriano told Irish Sports Daily on Tuesday. "I talked to him today. He’s trying to figure it out now. He’s definitely very interested in Notre Dame. I think he’s sitting down with the family and figuring it out over Christmas here."

"He really enjoyed the campus," the coach said. "He really enjoyed the facilities. He enjoyed the players and the coaches. He got a chance to see a bowl practice. He likes what he’s seeing from the offense. There are a lot of positives, it’s closer to home. There are a just a lot of good positives right now. He’s got to weigh everything and sit down and go over everything with mom and dad. The education from Notre Dame, the whole picture over there was really, really good."

"He would fit very easily into that style," he said. "He can play multiple places. He’s very versatile that way. He could be a position-guy, he could be on the outside. He knows how to run good routes and get down the field. He could play in any spot really in their offense."

"He felt really comfortable around those guys, that’s what he told me….There are some guys from the area. There are a couple of guys on the team that he’s played against, that he knows…He felt very comfortable."

"There’s a lot of pressure on the kid now," Andriano said. "No matter what, he’s got to figure out what’s best for him and his situation. He’s got to go with it and there’s no looking back. He’s got to make that decision and sign Feb. 1st and then it’s gung-ho."

"I think he would love to try to decide in the next week," the coach said. "He really loved Nebraska when he was there and now he really loved Notre Dame when he was there. He’s really just trying to make sure he takes a step back, looks at everything again and talks everything over at home. I think it’ll probably take a week or so to get this thing figured out. He just wants to sit on it for a minute here and take a breath."

Scout has an article that Shumate said he “fell in love” with Notre Dame during his visit.

Apperantly Gunner is going to LSU

According to an LSU recruiting Analyst…To be honest, im kind of happy. I get the feeling were gonna pull Fuller now, who impressed me a lot more with the film. That kid is an athlete. Plus, we still got EG.

Yeah he was right

And not that it really matters.

But there’s a difference between making an educated guess that a recruit is going somewhere and stating you have an inside source in the Kiel camp saying he’s going to X school and he’ll announce today or tomorrow (of which none of that was true and he announced a week later) – which was what this guy did.

He introduced the Mouth to ND football. He’s got an SBNation account and handle, but the interwebs baffle him slightly, hence why he has not commented all that much. Uncle Joe is the wise elder statesman of ND football opinionation-ry. Think Lou Somogyi without the website.

by Michael Collins on Jan 1, 2012 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, we pretty much NEVER pull a player out of Louisiana.

LSU has been so good it’s like “what’s the point.” And we’ve been able to make hay in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, so why duke it out with the hat in Louisiana, I guess. Seems like we could pull some of the good in-state guys that LSU passes on, but Louisiana is not as populous as Texas, so LSU probably takes all of the in-state 4-5 stars, in addition to some great players from elsewhere.

Not getting Kiel is not a critical development for ND

Getting a QB this year was a want not a requirement. They have three veteran QBs returning. It would have been great to have gotten a kid as good as Kiel, but it would have been a bonus. Players like Shumate, Russell, Wright, Odenigbo and Garnett or Banner are bigger needs than another QB.

As for Fuller, he looks like he would be a good fit, but if he goes elsewhere, no big deal.

I've always thought that too

However, Cal isn’t that football crazy and Tedford has at least been fairly consistent—-despite slipping a little bit the past two seasons.

Remember Cal was 28-61 in the 8 seasons prior to his arrival, and he immediately turned the program around.

He’s 48-38 in conference play with league finishes at 4, 3, 2, 4, 1, 7, 4, 5, 8, 4, and 6th. That’s an average finish of just over 4th…which is where I’d expect Cal to be.

I checked out his OOC schedule (he’s 30-10) and the teams aren’t horrendous as one would expect.

Wins over: Baylor, New Mexico State (3x), Michigan State (2x), Southern Miss (2x), Virginia Tech, Air Force, Cal-State Sacramento, Illinois, BYU, Minnesota (2x), Portland State, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Colorado State (2x), Louisiana Tech, Air Force, Miami, Maryland, Eastern Washington, Cal-Davis, Colorado (2x), Fresno State, and Presbyterian.

Losses to: Air Force, Kansas State, Colorado State, Utah (2x), Texas Tech, Tennessee, Maryland, Nevada, and Texas last night.

Considering he’s 5-3 in bowl games, I think he’s still pretty safe.

Sky rockets in flight.

they’ve said over and over again where they are going. I agree where there is smoke there is fire, but not when the smoke is manufactured by people in the media based on virtually nothing.

They’ve openly admitted every single thing going on with their recruitment along the way and are quite frankly sick of being asked the same thing everyday. They are having a little fun with it, which is probably the best thing to do in that situation. They have good heads on their respective shoulders and are handling this well.

Tee and Sheldon Day are the current commits that are EEs

About Tee…he is obviously messing around with the media. He and Dee have admitted as much on their FBs and in interviews. Everything with them is all ND. They just are having a little fun because they, by their own admission, are sick of getting asked the same questions everyday when they keep telling everyone they are 100% Irish. I don’t blame them one bit. The recruiting reporters out there are really a piece of work. Just throwing things out there to show that they got a “scoop” that wasn’t really there. And the people that follow this stuff religiously (guilty) are a little messed up too, hanging on every little thing these 18 year olds say and do. It’s a ridiculous industry. End rant.

Good news...

Elijah Shumate is announcing at the AA Bowl on Jan. 7th. Moving up his timeframe and cancelling his other visits really leaves only one choice, although South Carolina and Rutgers are technically still in the mix. All signs point to another huge commit at a position of need for the Irish.

by Michael Collins on Jan 1, 2012 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I wouldn't read too much into that stuff

It’s not uncommon for a recruit to wear his different suitors’ caps and t-shirts. Until they make the announcement I’d take it with a grain of salt.

by Irishane on Jan 1, 2012 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

He said the hat...

went with his shoes. Gotta love recruiting.

Shumate is Irish according to people out of Don Bosco. If Yuri commits at the game on Saturday, he will be Irish too, but I would still expect him to visit Michigan (where he is a self-identified lifelong fan). Work to do there regardless of what he does this weekend.

In other DB recruiting news, Coach Alford is still working ridiculously hard on Brian Poole to get him to flip from Florida. It’s no easy task getting a kid out of his comfort zone, but if anyone can do it, it’s Alford.

A DB class of Shepard, Darby, Shumate, Wright, and Poole (or even 4 out of those 5) will make as much if not more noise than the DL haul did last year. This staff knows how to get what it wants. Don’t be surprised if it happens.

Speculation is

that he is down to ND, Cal and Oregon with Cal slightly favored.

by Michael Collins on Jan 2, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Man, just as soon as you ask...

he did a chat on Rivals tonight. He really appears down to Cal and ND. He said that ND and Cal have been recruiting him the hardest and that he likes Coach Brey and Coach Montgomery best out of any of the basketball coaches recruiting him. He also said he sees himself in a 3-4 but he could play in any system, he looks at the depth charts but knows you gotta compete for PT, and he likes the national exposure of ND. He has the best relationships with Cal’s incoming recruits out of any of the classes. Distance isn’t a factor but the city he will be in does (gotta question his choice of finalists then).

He would take up Louis Nix on his offer to take jersey #9. Nix told him on Twitter that he would flip his number around to #6 so Arik could have 9.

He is still planning on EE and is announcing within the next two weeks, but not this weekend as he is still undecided. He likens himself to Julius Peppers and Calais Campbell (tall DEs).
