Week 6 BlogPoll is Out: LSU is 1, Notre Dame at 32
Notre Dame is moving on up in the latest BlogPoll, although they are still annoyingly behind Michigan State. The Irish got a dozen votes, including a few in the mid-teens. It'll be interesting to see whether the Irish or Trojans, who sit right behind them, can get ranked before their October 22nd showdown. I think Notre Dame could get there if they blow out Air Force and have a clean sheet turnover-wise, but I doubt even a big win at Cal next Thursday could propel USC.

I think 32 is about right...
The two losses hurt for sure, but they weren’t beaten by good teams (hurts to say that). But, beating a then ranked #15 MSU and putting together a three-game winning streak against decent teams has put the Irish back near the top #25. This makes a lot of sense to me…
Convincing wins over AF and USC will go a long way in breaking the top 25. I don’t think just beating the AF Falcons will get the Irish ranked…
Quality Losses
In the end, rankings only truly matter when it is being chosen who the top two teams are that play in the big bowl. Otherwise, it’s a pretty academic exercise. Maybe being up there in the top ten consistently assists in recruiting. But just as I tried not to get too happy when we were 16th pre-season, I also try not to care when we’re in the 30’s. Is that really any different than being 21st? What changes?
I’m just a bit surprised that the voters don’t seem to give a rip about the quality of our LOSSES. I mean, USF was ranked for a couple weeks, and we manhandled them. The only reason they dropped was because Pitt beat them, and we beat Pitt! And look at Michigan. We were one play away from beating them (having lead for about 58 minutes of the game). Does it make sense that we’re THIS far behind them? No. Conclusion: rankings are irrational, often the result of votes by people who have not seen almost any of the play they’re voting about.
Trying to remain objective, and failing miserably. You?
