Navy at Notre Dame Open Thread
Navy Midshipmen at Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oct 29, 2011 3:30 PM EDT
Navy and Notre Dame face off for the 85th time this afternoon. The Mids ride into this game with an ugly 2-5 record but hold a two game winning streak over the Irish. What was once a free W has become anything but for Notre Dame in the last few seasons.
This comes in the wake of a brutal week for Notre Dame Fans. The ugly loss to USC last Saturday Night left the fan base to debate a multitude of issues surrounding the state of the program. Everything from offensive play calls to piped in music has been debated in earnest across the web this week.
Hat tip to all of our readers for keeping those discussions as rational and respectful as usual this week. We should all keep that in mind while we watch Bob Diaco's latest version of "bend but don't break" option defense this afternoon. Someone remind me that I said that some time around the end of the 1st quarter!
The broadcast starts at 3:30 ET on NBC.
Welcome to your Navy at Notre Dame Open Thread.
The conversation begins after the jump.
Go Irish!

I think the Kelly "debacle" got blown WAY out of proportion.
Frankly his comments got twisted to be much more extreme than they were in actuality, and even if they weren’t he is well within his rights to demand accountability from the players as well. If they were demanding it from themselves he wouldn’t have to remind them of this.
One could definitely argue that the entire “episode” should have been handled in house but it is what it is. The fact that Rudolph and Clausen weighed in via Twitter almost further proves his point as far as I’m concerned. It falls into that “entitlement” issue that we were discussing when Kelly took over.
When Kelly took over the program I thought there would be a little bit of a natural divide that he would have to manage between the CW guys and his guys.
Bottom line it is high time for these upperclassmen to step up and take their destiny into their own hands. I actually think this whole episode will ultimately prompt them to do just that and in the end the team will actually come out on the other side more closely knit and better for it.

The frustration is I had hoped they had turned that corner last year
but apparently we’ve still got a ways to go – hopefully the ball starts to roll the right way today!
Well I'm at the game so you won't hear from me
I just ask that you observe a moment of silence for me if we lose. I may not make it back alive if that happens.

Silly kid’s day care scheduling a Halloween party for Saturday morning…
It’s been a rough week, and there’s no end in sight regarding grad school beating me down. I could really use a victory today to pick me up. I don’t care if the players are pissed at Kelly—when you make plays on the field, guys, no one calls you out. Shut up and play.

Nebraska has dominated them.
I kind of thought that might happen after the miracle finish vs Wiscy last week. Tough to get back up after that and Nebraska has a solid football team. They are especially tough in Lincoln.

Looks like this to me on D.
4 DL with normal OLBs playing DE. Responsible for stopping Teich.
Foxy & Slaughter playing OLB & responsible for the QB/Pitch
Teo in the middle free to do nothing but run to the football. If the DL keeps the OL off of him he will have 20+ tackles today.
Mottal playing closer to the LOS, reading pass first then coming up in run support.
Harrison playing Center Field.
Corners covering their receivers until run is confirmed then they come up in support as well.
Anyone else seeing something different?

His scheme looks like it is actually going to work just fine.
Slightly different than what the Coach threw out but accomplishing the same objectives for the most part. Only difference is OLBs slow playing the QB when he gets to the edge. Hasn’t been much of an issue yet as Te’o isn’t getting blocked and is showing up on scene to assist. Would like to see those OLB’s just go ahead and pop the QB.

Not really. The way I understand it the intent is to literally delay the play for a second to allow
more defenders to arrive on scene in support. The problem is that if those guys don’t show up to help for any reason (OL releasing and geting on LBs) then you have one guy standing there responsible for the QB and the Pitch Man.

We should really score at will today. Their D is not good. At all.
We have mismatches in the running and passing game. They can’t stop the run or cover any of our receivers. Haven’t even bothered throwing to Eifert yet. This should be a big win. SHOULD BE.
